Subject: New Book, Numerical Methods for Elliptic and Parabolic PDEs

Numerical Methods for Elliptic and Parabolic Partial Differential Equations
by Peter Knabner and Lutz Angermann
with contributions by Andreas Rupp
Texts in Applied Mathematics, vol. 44

This graduate-level text provides an application oriented introduction
to the numerical methods for elliptic and parabolic partial
differential equations. It covers finite difference, finite element,
and finite volume methods, interweaving theory and applications
throughout. The book examines modern topics such as adaptive methods,
multilevel methods, and methods for convection-dominated problems and
includes detailed illustrations and extensive exercises. For students
with mathematics major it is an excellent introduction to the theory
and methods, guiding them in the selection of methods and helping them
to understand and pursue finite element programming. For engineering
and physics students it provides a general framework for the
formulation and analysis of methods.

This second edition sees additional chapters on mixed discretization
and on generalizing and unifying known approaches; broader
applications on systems of diffusion, convection and reaction;
enhanced chapters on node-centered finite volume methods and methods
of convection-dominated problems, specifically treating the
now-popular cell-centered finite volume method; and the consideration
of realistic formulations beyond the Poisson's equation for all models
and methods.

Subject: Parallel and Distributed Sci and Eng Computing, France, May 2022

The 23nd IEEE International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed
Scientific and Engineering Computing (PDSEC-22) (http://www.ieee-
tcsc.org/2022/pdsec/) will be held on May 30, 2022 in Lyon, France in
conjunction with IPDPS 2022.

Deadline: PDSEC-22 deadline: 21 Jan 2022 (AoE)

Scope and Interests: The technological trends in HPC system evolution
indicates an increasing burden placed on application developers due to
the management of the unprecedented complexity levels of hardware and
its associated performance characteristics.  Many existing scientific
applications codes are unlikely to perform well on future systems
without major modifications or even complete rewrites. In the future,
it will be necessary to utilize, in concert, many characteristics such
as multiple levels of parallelism, many lightweight cores, complex
memory hierarchies, novel I/O technology, power capping, system-wide
temporal/spatial performance heterogeneity and reliability concerns.
The parallel and distributed computing (PDC) community has developed
new programming models, algorithms, libraries and tools to meet these
challenges to accommodate productive code development and effective
system use. However, the scientific application community still needs
to identify the benefit through practical evaluations.  Thus, the
focus of this workshop is on methodologies and experiences used in
scientific and engineering applications and algorithms to achieve
sustainable code development for better productivity, application
performance and reliability.

Subject: Research Technician Position, Simulation of Hydrogen Diffusion

This work will be focusing on the atomistic modelling of hydrogen
adsorption and diffusion in metal alloys. Under certain conditions,
the presence of hydrogen may lead to loss of ductility, strength
and/or toughness in metals, a phenomenon called hydrogen-induced
embrittlement (HIE). HIE can pose a risk to the sustainability of oil
and gas structures, gearboxes and anchors of offshore wind turbines or
steel architectural constructions. Although causing a serious threat
for metal structures, HIE remains a complex process that is not
completely understood because of the variety and complexity of
mechanisms. Here, we will tackle this issue from an atomistic
perspective.

The research technician will employ existing force fields combined
with kinetic Monte Carlo and/or Molecular Dynamics to simulate intra-
and inter-crystalline hydrogen diffusion in metal alloys of interest
for the wind turbine sector

Subject: Postdoc Position, Functional Underpinnings of SBP FDs, Warwick

Fixed term contract for 2 years or until 31 May 2024 (whichever occurs
earlier).

We seek a researcher with (or about to receive) a PhD in mathematics
or a related discipline, to work with Dr Ed Brambley in the
Mathematics Institute at the University of Warwick on an EPSRC funded
project investigating deep connections between certain types of Finite
Differences and Finite Elements.  Expertise in Numerical Analysis is
desirable.

Preliminary research by Dr Brambley has shown that Finite Differences
with a particular beneficial property (namely Summation-By-Parts) have
behaviour similar to Finite Elements (further details are available on
request).  It is hoped that, by understanding this connection, both
improved finite differences and a new class of finite elements might
be discovered.  Whilst this project is fundamentally of a theoretical
nature, success might allow for a practical numerical proof-of-concept
to be developed, perhaps with other collaborators in the field of
aeroacoustics.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Time-parallel Algorithms, UK

I am currently recruiting for a one year postdoctoral position,
suitable for a newly-graduated or nearly-graduated PhD student, in
time-parallel algorithms for modelling the evolution of sedimentary
landscapes. These models are nonlinear diffusion equations with
time-dependent coefficients, discretised using the finite element
method. The work will involve using (and developing) our library
(which is built around Firedrake) for building time-parallel solvers
that use the "Paradiag" waveform relaxation solver technique, to
demonstrate and evaluate these methods for sedimentary landscape
evolution.

From: Vyacheslav Kungurtsev [log in to unmask]
Date: December 12, 2021
Subject: PhD Positions, Polynomial Optimization, Czech Technical Univ

PhD Position: Polynomial Optimization in Structural Engineering

Polynomial optimization is an exciting area of research in
optimization, just at the boundary between what is undecidable
(continuous optimization) and what is efficiently solvable (easier
conic optimization problems, such as linear and semidefinite
programming). Sustained progress in the field over the past two
decades has enabled new applications within many areas of engineering.

There is a PhD studentship available in related topics, to be
supervised by Jakub Marecek and Vyacheslav Kungurtsev (Dept. of
Computer Science) and Didier Henrion (Dept. of Control Engineering) at
the Czech Technical University, in close collaboration with the teams
of Jan Zeman (Department of Mechanics) and Michal Kocvara (School of
Mathematics at the University of Birmingham, UK). The position is full
time and limited to 3 years, but can be extended in case of mutual
interest. The studentship comes with a monthly salary similar to the
average pay in Prague, the Czech Republic (approximately 45000 CZK per
month before a notably low tax), and a travel budget. The Czech
capital regularly ranks among five European cities within the world's
best cities in the world to live in (cf. Time Out Magazine index for
2021) and CTU's offices are in a centrally-located palace with a view
of Prague Castle. For more information, please see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague

We seek candidates with Masters degrees in Mathematics, Computer
Science, Operations Research, Engineering or related disciplines, with
excellent mathematical aptitude, as demonstrated by involvement in
mathematical olympiads, relevant coursework, or undergraduate
research. A preference is given to: candidates with experience with
semidefinite programming; candidates with experience with structural
engineering; candidates with experience in frequency-domain methods
(e.g. signal processing); candidates with experience in programming in
Python or MATLAB.  We expect to start interviewing candidates in
January 2022. Please leave your email address at
