Subject: New Book, Hybrid High-order Methods

Hybrid high-order methods. A primer with application to solid
mechanics. SpringerBriefs in Mathematics, 2021 (136p., 24
illus.)

ISBN: 978-3-030-81476-2
https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-81477-9

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of hybrid high-order
methods for computational mechanics. The first three chapters
offer a gentle introduction to the method and its mathematical
foundations for the diffusion problem. The next four chapters
address applications of increasing complexity in the field of
computational mechanics: linear elasticity, hyperelasticity, wave
propagation, contact, friction, and plasticity. The last chapter
provides an overview of the main implementation aspects including
some examples of Matlab code.

The book is primarily intended for graduate students,
researchers, and engineers working in related fields of
application, and it can also be used as a support for graduate
and doctoral lectures.

We hope the community will enjoy reading and using this book.

Subject: Scientific Computing in EE, The Netherlands, Mar 2022

In October, we sent out the first announcement and call for papers for
SCEE 2022. We are now extending the deadline for the submission of
contributed papers: the new deadline is November 30, 2021, at 23.59
CET. If you are still thinking of submitting a paper or poster, please
send in your contribution using the guidelines provided on the web
page: https://www.scee-conferences.org/.

As indicated in the earlier announcement, this will be a very festive
edition of the SCEE conference since it marks 25 years of the series
of conferences SCEE, whose first edition took place in Darmstadt in
1997. A nice booklet containing the history of SCEE conferences will
be distributed amongst participants, giving you a good impression of
the past, including also an extensive (and impressive!) list of
keynote speakers. The festivity will also be reflected at the dinner!

We are hoping to welcome you to Amsterdam next year at SCEE 2022! In
case of any queries, feel free to reach out to us at

Subject: Postdoc Position, Computational Mechanics/Arctic Glaciology

The project "Comprehensive Observations of Episodic Basal, Englacial
and Lateral Influences on Ice Stream Dynamics" (COEBELI) is a
collaborative effort of several research institutions to understand
the mechanisms leading to rapid ice flow of outlet glaciers of the
Greenland ice sheet. The project uses a combination of field
observations (dynamics, seismicity), remote-sensing products, and
state-of-the-art numerical models to investigate non-continuous
processes leading to fast ice flow.

Within the project, the Material Point Method (MPM) will be used to
model detailed high-rate processes such as glacier calving and tsunami
wave generation, episodic crevassing in the ice stream margins, and
basal fracturing processes leading to seismic emissions. The
successful candidate will interpret field data from Jakobshavn Isbrae
(Greenland) with model results to obtain relevant model parameters,
and to investigate the physical processes.

Subject: PhD Position, Machine Learning for Solving PDEs, Univ of Bath, UK

The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Accountable, Responsible
and Transparent AI (ART-AI) at the University of Bath is inviting
applications for a fully funded PhD studentship under the joint
supervision of Dr Lisa Maria Kreusser (Department of Mathematical
Sciences), Dr Xi Chen (Department of Computer Sciences) and Dr
Pranav Singh (Department of Mathematical Sciences). The position
is an opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at the
intersection of numerical analysis, partial differential
equations, and machine learning.

Significant advances in machine learning and data analysis have
been achieved in recent years, but current state-of the art
machine learning techniques often lack robustness and come
without any theoretical guarantees. On the other hand, partial
differential equations are an essential tool for modelling in
science and engineering which are based on rigorous and well
understood scientific principles. This project aims to develop
new algorithms and theoretical foundations towards reliable and
transparent AI based solutions for nonlinear differential
equations describing complex phenomena in nature and engineering.

Funding for this position will be available for up to 4 years,
covering tuition fees and maintenance at the national doctoral
stipend rate.
