Subject: New Book, Sparse Solutions of Underdetermined Linear Systems

Sparse Solutions of Underdetermined Linear Systems and Their
Applications by Ming-Jun Lai and Yang Wang

This textbook presents a special solution to underdetermined linear
systems where the number of nonzero entries in the solution is very
small compared to the total number of entries. This is called a sparse
solution. Since underdetermined linear systems can be very different,
the authors explain how to compute a sparse solution using many
approaches. The book contains 64 algorithms for finding sparse
solutions of underdetermined linear systems and their applications for
matrix completion, graph clustering, and phase retrieval, and provides
a detailed explanation of these algorithms including derivations and
convergence analysis. Exercises for each chapter help readers
understand the material.

Subject: Optimization and Market Design, ONLINE, Oct 2021

Data intensive firms like Uber, AirBnB, Deliveroo and the European
Electricity Markets play the role of market makers connecting buyers
with sellers. They must, among other things, monitor quality,
standardize offerings so as to operate at scale, determine prices and
facilitate search. Optimization plays a fundamental role in the
design of the rules of a marketplace. What distinguishes the
optimization problems in this setting from classical resource
allocation problems is the role of incentives. How should they be
incorporated into optimization models?

The ALOP (DFG Research Training group 2126 "Algorithmic Optimization")
Autumn School on "Optimization and Market Design", taking place Oct. 3
- Oct. 7, 2021, will provide an overview of the mathematical
challenges that such questions present from some of the leading
authorities on the subject:
- Rakesh V. Vohra (UPenn) "Allocating Indivisible Goods"
- Moshe Babaioff (Microsoft Research) "How to Maximize Profit When
  Selling Multiple Items?"
- Garrett van Ryzin (Amazon's Supply Chain Optimization Technologies)
"Minimum Earnings Regulation and the Stability of Marketplaces"
- Martin Bichler (TU Munich) "Equilibrium Computation in Markets"

Due to the current circumstances, the autumn school will take place
online via Zoom meetings. Registration and participation is free of
charge. The registration deadline is August 30th, 2021. We also plan
to have a poster session and a poster award.

Subject: Facullty Position, Data-driven Computational Modeling, KU Leuven

The Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at KU Leuven is
seeking to fill a full-time position of a tenure-track assistant
professor in "data- driven computational modelling of dynamical
systems in health and industry". The successful candidate will join
the STADIUS Center for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing, and Data
Analytics.

The research activities of ESAT-STADIUS are in the wide domain of
mathematical engineering. Starting from fundamental research and
insights in (multi-)linear algebra, statistics and optimization,
numerical algorithms are developed for data-based dynamical system
modeling, with linear (such as subspace identification) and machine
learning approaches (such as least squares support vector
machines). These models are used for control, prediction, monitoring,
anomaly detection, etc. The resulting algorithms are deployed in a
wide range of 'big data' settings, namely decision support platforms
with applications in industry 4.0 and health 2.0. As a new PI in
ESAT-STADIUS, your research program will align with this background
and tradition, and you will be given the opportunity to establish a
personalized, impactful strategic basic research program in
mathematical engineering, that should lead to applications in
aforementioned areas. Within this targeted area of research, your
research program provides evidence of originality and promise. You
will strive for excellence in your scholarly research: publish at the
highest academic level, initiate national and international
collaboration, obtain competitive research funding, attract and
supervise doctoral students. You will endorse the international
research strategy and contribute to the further strengthening of the
scientific reputation of ESAT-STADIUS.

KU Leuven is committed to creating a diverse environment and is
therefore an equal opportunity employer. It explicitly encourages
candidates from groups that are currently underrepresented at the
university to submit their applications.
