2021 Summer School in Computational Physiology

Simula Research Laboratory, Oslo, Norway, June 21- July 02
University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA, August 09-17

In conjunction with the University of California San Diego, Simula
Research Laboratory is pleased to announce the 7th edition of our
annual Summer School in Computational Physiology. This school focuses
on multiscale modelling of electrophysiology and mechanics of the
heart, and related material in computational neurophysiology and
pharmacology.

We are currently seeking master's and early doctoral students to
participate, and will accept applications until February 12th
2021. The initial series of lectures will be hosted by Simula Research
Laboratory in Oslo, Norway (June 21st- July 2nd), followed by project
work, a workshop in scientific writing from Nature Masterclasses, and
final presentations hosted by the University of California San Diego
from August 9th-17th. The travel and accommodation expenses for
successful applicants will be supported by grants from Simula.

Due to COVID-19, logistics and locations for the 2021 school are not
yet decided. The school may be conducted remotely.

Details regarding scheduling, logistics, core scientific material, and
the application process can be found through our online call for
participation: http://www.simula.no/sscp

The course will also be made available online via ZOOM

Lecturers: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Dumbser and Dr. Saray Busto
Dates: February 1-5 2021
Website: http://www.unitn.it/nm2021
Course fee: 250 EUR (online)

This advanced short course is primarily designed for PhD students and
post-doctoral researchers in applied mathematics, scientific
computing, and computational physics and computational mechanics.

Summary: The course consists in a structured intensive one-week
programme of 40 hours of theoretical lectures and computer laboratory
exercises on advanced numerical methods for hyperbolic partial
differential equations with applications in engineering and science.
The course covers high order finite volume and discontinuous Galerkin
methods, also on unstructured triangular simplex meshes; Riemann
solvers, higher order TVD, ENO and WENO schemes, the discretization of
hyperbolic PDE with non-conservative products, well balanced schemes
as well as meshless Lagrangian particle methods. The lectures are
supplemented with computer laboratory exercises to provide practical
hands-on experience concerning the practical aspects of the
implementation of these advanced numerical methods.

Subject: Computational ML, ONLINE, Feb-May 2021

The Continuum Jumpstart Course Computational Machine Learning (ML) for
Scientists and Engineers is designed to equip you with the knowledge
you need to understand, train, design and machine learning algorithms,
particularly deep neural networks, and even deploy them on the cloud.

You'll learn by programming machine learning algorithms from scratch
in a hands-on manner using a one-of-a-kind cloud-based interactive
computational textbook that will guide you, and check your progress,
step-by-step. Using real-world datasets and datasets of your choosing,
you will understand, and we will discuss, via computational discovery
and critical reasoning, the strengths and limitations of the
algorithms and how they can or cannot be overcome. You will understand
how machine learning algorithms do what they claim to do so you can
reproduce these while being able to reason about and spot wild,
unsupported claims of their efficacy.

By the end of the course, you will be ready to harness the power of
machine learning in your daily job and prototype, we hope, innovative
new ML applications for your company with datasets you alone have
access to.

It's ideal for folks who want to go deeper than a regular MOOC and
want to learn by coding.

See https://continuum.engin.umich.edu/programs/jumpstart-ml/
for a description -- apply by Jan 8th, 2021 for cohort starting Feb 15th.

See https://continuum.engin.umich.edu/programs/jumpstart-ml/testimonials-and-advice/
for testimonials from the pilot cohort.

The first issue of BIT, journal for numerical mathematics, was
published in 1961, and to celebrate 60 years of BIT we will arrange a
conference in Uppsala, Sweden, August 17-19 2021. The scope of BIT
includes theoretical, computational and applied aspects of solving PDE
and ODE, as well as numerical linear algebra and approximation. These
will also be the themes for the conference. There will be invited
talks by associate editors, and contributed sessions, where we welcome
any topic within the scope of BIT. To enable broad participation we
are planning for a very low conference fee. More information such as
confirmed speakers, deadlines for submitting abstracts and
registrations will be published on
http://www.it.uu.se/conferences/BIT60 as soon as it is
available. However, the conference will only take place if the
pandemic situation has improved to a point where meeting in large
groups and travel is considered safe. Let's all hope for the best, so
that we can welcome you in Uppsala in August!
