My first thought was Jitsi which in my experience is great and you can screen share and chat:

Microsoft Teams w/ Jabber

Element
Not sure how far the free version will take you without hosting but it has a lot of features

Just chat:
Pidgin

If you actually want to just takeover someone desktop:
Microsoft's built it Remote Desktop Protocol might work.
Teamviewer

It might be hard to configure this securely in computer lab scenario, and not sure how far the free version will go.

Hi folks,
I'm looking for something serviceable to use in our computer lab when we re-open to the
public, to minimize the need to walk over to their computers to assist them, so we can stay
socially distanced. Therefore screen sharing and co-browsing would be important, but beyond
that, we don't need a whole "communications/customer relationship system." Suggestions,
anyone?
