Subject: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Journalism Position

Dear Dean Michael Wirth,
A few weeks ago I sent you a letter about an opening for a tenure-track assistant professor of journalism here at the University of Richmond. Our ideal candidate has worked as a professional journalist and has a graduate degree in journalism, hence our letter to you. Perhaps you know of a former student who might be appropriate. I wanted to follow up in a format that may make it easier for you to share. I have pasted the job description below. I have also included it as an attachment.
The University of Richmond in Richmond, Va., is a small, private, highly selective liberal arts college. Our department is small - only four full-time faculty, all whom have long careers as journalists.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Sincerely,

Robert Hodierne
Chairman, Department of Journalism

The Department of Journalism in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for the 2020-21 academic year.
Candidates should be able to offer courses that focus on basic and advanced journalism skills for print, broadcast and digital news, and that expand on those skills to include more intensive preparation for the digital world. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of academic achievement, including a graduate degree, evidence of effective teaching, significant scholarship, and professional journalism experience. For more information on the department, see http://journalism.richmond.edu.
In addition to teaching excellence, the assistant professor must continue to produce a robust body of journalism and/or scholarly research as part of the tenure process. Candidates should have scholarly interests in one of following topic areas: race/ethnicity, international affairs, online publishing, or the impact of digital media. The job also includes serving on academic committees and other forms of service to both the University and the professional journalism community.
The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With nearly 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and 92% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is student-centered, and focused on preparing students "to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society."
The School of Arts and Sciences, the liberal arts core of the University, is a thriving and inclusive community of 230 faculty, twenty-two departments and ten interdisciplinary programs. We offer distinctive and engaging learning opportunities to students and outstanding resources to support the scholarly, creative and pedagogical activities of the faculty. For information about the foundations, goals and initiatives of the School of Arts and Sciences, see the Concept 30 Strategic Plan at https://as.richmond.edu/concept30/index.html.
The University is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body and to supporting an inclusive campus community that values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. For more information on the department and its programs, please see: https://journalism.richmond.edu/.
Candidates can apply here: https://richmond.csod.com/ats/careersite/JobDetails.aspx?site=1&id=1815
You may also contact Robert Hodierne, Chair, Journalism Department, at [log in to unmask] Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter containing a brief summary of research and teaching interests, and a teaching statement that articulates teaching philosophy, interests, and future development goals as well as involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. In addition, please include copies of academic transcripts and the names of three references who will receive an email asking them to submit their reference letters to the University's Human Resources department at [log in to unmask] Review of applications will begin October 1, 2019, and continue until the position is filled.
