Dear undergraduate math majors, math minors, and all students with
interest in math.
I am looking for a bright student who is interested in the project I
currently have available in my lab. The project involves performing
research using computational tools (python) with the aim of publishing
results of the research in peer-reviewed literature.
The project involves investigation of whether there are better or worse
ways of doing science. There was a recent paper making an argument for
“Natural selection of bad science” (Smaldino and McElreath Royal Society
Open Science 2016) using mathematical modeling. This paper concluded
that the current reward system in science leads to evolution of "bad"
science in which most reported findings are false. Together with a
bright math student we have been testing different ideas of how
evolution of such "bad" science can be prevented. The new student is
needed to extend our current modeling/programming framework to allow for
testing several alternative hypotheses and to allow for collaborative
science.
In this project you are likely to improve your programming skills in
python, learn some statistics and data visuzaliation methods, and learn
how to run code on multi-core/multi-node clusters (Advanced Computing
Facility at UT).
