Students, final call to have the experience of your life in the new
course “Overview of data science” which is offered this coming Fall 2019
semester (Math 499) as a pilot (i.e., it may or may not run again!).
Many of you are getting close to finishing your studies and probably are
looking forward starting working. No matter what you studied at the
University, pure or applied math, biology or engineering, your future
job (if it is a well paid job) is very likely to involve working with
data. This class will provide basic skills of ways data analyses can be
performed and results of such analyses be accurately presented. The
course will teach how to use programming language R for data processing,
data analysis, and data visualization. We will also overview basics of
the scientific method and how to tell whether a given experiment
involves a good experimental design.
There is no need for prior background in programming because all basic
skills will be taught in the class (math computer lab). The core of the
course will be working with experimental data coming from peer-reviewed
publications, reproducing results from these publications, and hopefully
providing additional insights into the biology using these data. By
completing the course you will have a product (paper) documenting your
skills in data analysis and presentation of results that you could use
in your porfolio for future employers/professional schools. Showing a
written paper of what you actually have done during studies at the
University could potentially separate you from many other job/school
applicants.
If you have any questions regarding the course and its planned format,
please contact the course Instructor, Vitaly V. Ganusov
([log in to unmask]). I have a solid draft of the syllabus I can share with you.
