From: Aleksandar Donev [log in to unmask]
Date: October 18, 2018
Subject: Courant Instructor Position, Modeling and Simulation, NYU

https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/jobs/12857

The Courant Institute is a center for advanced training and research
in the mathematical sciences. This year up to two Courant Institute
Instructorships (CI) in the Department of Mathematics will be awarded
to postdoctoral scientists working in the area of Modeling and
Simulation. These positions are co-funded by the National Science
Foundation as part of a Research and Training Group (RTG) in Modeling
and Simulation, which is managed by Profs. Aleksandar Donev, Miranda
Cerfon-Holmes, Leif Ristroph, Charles Peskin, and Esteban
Tabak. Questions about the RTG-CI position should be directed to
Aleksandar Donev or Miranda Holmes-Cerfon. The RTG-CI appointments
carry a light teaching load of one course per semester and are for a
two- or three-year term. The positions are primarily for recent
Ph.D.'s and candidates must have a degree in mathematics or some
affiliated science or engineering field, and have research experience
in modeling and simulation. Applicants must include a brief cover
letter explaining why they believe they are a good candidate for the
RTG in Modeling and Simulation. Applications and supporting documents
are due by December 15th, 2018 for appointments to begin the following
academic year. (EOE/AA/Minorities/Females/Vet/Disabled/Sexual
Orientation/Gender Identity employer.) RTG-CI applicants must be a
citizen, national or permanent resident of the United States or its
territories and possessions. As an RTG instructor, they will have the
enriching opportunity and responsibility to closely interact with and
mentor both undergraduate and graduate students at Courant that are
working in the area of modeling and simulation. Along with conducting
research in the area of modeling & simulation, the specific roles in
which RTG-CIs are expected to be actively involved include:

1. Attend, present in and engage in discussions during the informal
RTG-related lunch time seminar together with other RTG graduate
   students and postdocs.
2. Supervise one or two projects in a graduate-level class on modeling
and simulation offered biennially, in addition to their one course
   teaching.
3. Act as a coordinator of an RTG-funded undergraduate research
program every other summer, along with a graduate student and
   faculty mentors.
4. Get involved as a presenter, instructor or mentor in outreach
activities, such as Courant's cSplash day for middle and high
   school students.

RTG-CIs will be guaranteed two months of summer support, in addition
to the standard benefits given to all Courant Instructors. Ample
travel funds will also be made available to RTG instructors.

From: Michael Bader [log in to unmask]
Date: October 16, 2018
Subject: PhD/Postdoc Positions, Computational Seismology at Exascale, Munich

The seismology group at University of Munich (LMU) and the
supercomputing group at Technical University of Munich (TUM) are
looking for ambitious, highly motivated PhD candidates and postdocs.
Within two new projects funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020
initiative, we will advance models for seismic hazard assessment and
earthquake-tsunami interaction by further developing the open-source
simulation software packages ExaHyPE and SeisSol.

SeisSol (cf. www.seissol.org) simulates seismic wave propagation and
dynamic rupture in complex geometries based on unstructured adaptive
tetrahedral meshes. ExaHyPE (cf. www.exahype.eu and www.exahype.org)
is an engine for solving hyperbolic PDE systems, including the seismic
wave equations. Both packages rely on the arbitrary high-order
accurate derivative discontinuous Galerkin method (ADER-DG).

Candidates should have a strong background in at least two of the
following areas:

- parallelisation of simulation software at extreme scales; experience
with heterogeneous platforms is particularly welcome
- performance engineering of simulation software
- earthquake source physics and fracture mechanics
- computational seismology and numerical methods

The Geophysics section of LMU (www.geophysik.uni-muenchen.de) and the
scientific computing section at TUM's Department of Informatics
(www5.in.tum.de) both offer excellent working conditions and host a
multitude of projects related to HPC and computational geoscience.

The starting date is flexible with the earliest opportunity in
November 2018. Evaluation of applications starts immediately until
positions are filled. Applications should be sent via email to

Alice-Agnes Gabriel
