****Please respond within 2 days **** to [log in to unmask] if you are
interested to participate in either of the two math competitions below.
Both are targeted at excellent undergraduate math students of **any**
major.
(1) Virginia Tech Regional Math Contest:
Takes place on Saturday, Oct 27, in the morning. It's locally proctored,
so you only need to travel to Ayres Hall. I'll let you know the room
later. We need your reply to anticipate the number of exams we should
prepare, and so that we can notify you of further details. If you hope
to participate, but are not sure, please respond and say so; that way
you stay in the loop.
More info and old exam problems can be found at
https://www.math.vt.edu/people/plinnell/Vtregional/
(2) Putnam Competition:
The most prestigious math competition available; universities from all
over the US and Canada participate, but again, it's locally proctored,
so you only need to travel to Ayres Hall. It takes place on the first
Saturday in December, which is Dec 01 this year, and it consists of two
sessions: a morning session from 10-1 and an afternoon session from 3-6.
Undergraduates of all majors with excellent math skills are encouraged
to participate; please let me know if you are interested to participate,
so that I can register you beforehand
(I am also requesting a response from Math 309 students and from former
participants that are still around and intend to participate again. And
let me know if you are interested but not sure, so as to keep your
options open.)
