the 27th High Performance Computing Symposium (HPC 2019), devoted to

large data stores are ushering in a new era of high performance
parallel and distributed simulations. Along with these new
capabilities come new challenges in computing and system modeling.
The goal of HPC 2019 is to encourage innovation in high performance
computing and communication technologies and to promote synergistic
advances in modeling methodologies and simulation. It will promote the
exchange of ideas and information between universities, industry,
supercomputing centers, and national laboratories about new
developments in system modeling, high performance computing and

The Department of Applied Mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate
School, in Monterey, California invites applications for one or more
tenure-track positions at the level of Assistant Professor
(exceptional candidates at all levels may be considered).
The Department of Applied Mathematics has a multifaceted mission to
provide an exceptional mathematical education focused on the unique
needs of NPS students, to conduct relevant research, and to provide
service to the broader community. The department offers masters and
doctoral degrees and encourages mathematical explorations in a broad
range of areas in applied mathematics with specific thrust areas that
support the mission of the school. We seek candidates who can teach a
wide range of courses (course listings can be found at math.nps.edu)
primarily as on-campus lectures, but sometimes delivered by
VTE. Candidates will also be expected to conduct an active program of
research and to direct student theses. The successful candidate for
this position will possess a doctorate in Mathematics or a closely
related area from an accredited university. Teaching experience is
highly desirable and evidence of exceptional research potential is
necessary. All areas of research will be considered, but preference
will be given to candidates specializing in areas of computational
discrete mathematics that support existing departmental research
efforts. Effective teaching is essential and candidates must have
excellent communication skills (both written and oral), as well as strong
interpersonal and organizational abilities. U. S. citizenship is required.

Subject: Assistant Professor Position, Mathematical Foundations of Deep Learning
The Department of Mathematics (at the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer
Science and Physics) at the University of Innsbruck seeks to fill the
position of a full-time (40 hours per week) assistant professor as of
February 01, 2019. The position is limited to 6 years. However, a
tenure track agreement can be offered within the first year of
employment. Upon positive evaluation, the position is converted into a
tenured associate professorship. The position holder should carry out
excellent research on the mathematical foundations of deep learning
and neural networks, for example in connection to inverse problems,
optimization, or approximation theory. In addition to the acquisition
of third-party funding, cooperation with applied research groups are
to be established. Moreover, this is one of 12 career positions the
University of Innsbruck is creating in diverse scientific disciplines
connected to digitalization. The Development Plan 2019-2024 of the
University of Innsbruck includes the creation of a new,
interdisciplinary center for digitalization. The holder of the
position is expected to prepare and conduct teaching at university
level within the study programs of the department of mathematics (in
English and German). Participation in the teaching of mathematics for
students in other study programs and faculties is also
expected. Moreover, the holder of the position is expected to (co-)
supervise students. In addition to duties in research and teaching,
the holder of the position is expected to network within the
department of mathematics and the university and to take part in
academic self- management.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: a) Doctoral degree in mathematics; b) postdoc
experience and significant scientific achievements beyond dissertation
/ PhD level; c) research expertise in the area of mathematical
foundations of deep learning and neural networks, demonstrated by
relevant publications in leading journals and presentations at
conferences / workshops; d) ability to collaborate with applied
scientists, proven by relevant publications; e) experience in teaching
at university level is desired; f) mobility experience; g) experience
in the handling of third-party funding; h) ability to communicate and
to work in a team.

in which all publications that can be assigned to the dissertation are

The Climate Modeling group at Argonne National Laboratory is looking
for a PostDoctoral scientist/numerical analyst with an interest in
climate modeling. The successful candidate will conduct basic
research on and development of methods for coupling components of a
climate model. The specific areas of interest are (1) numerical
integrators for coupled atmosphere-ocean models, (2) advanced time
stepping methods such as partitioned, implicit-explicit and multirate
schemes, and (3) analysis of deficiencies in current climate model
coupling methods. The candidate will participate at all the stages of
the implementation of the resulting methods from prototyping in
high-level languages to development in a high performance-computing
environment. The candidate will be part of the CANGA project
(canga-scidac.org): a team that includes computational mathematicians,
climate model experts, computer, and earth system scientists. The
candidate will work with staff of both the Environmental Science and
Mathematics and Computer Science Divisions. These programs focus on
climate modeling and advanced scientific computing.
