Subject: Questionnaire on the value of newer Fortran standards

Benefits of continuing Fortran standardisation

If you use Fortran, directly or indirectly, please complete this
survey

      https://goo.gl/forms/JUFUReOoVUin2m8D2

It has been developed by the committee of the BCS Fortran Group
(http://www.fortran.bcs.org/) to quantify the value of modern Fortran
standards to organisations and individuals. The results of the survey
will be shared with the ISO Fortran standardisation committee, so your
responses will help shape the future of the Fortran language.

The survey will run until 31 Dec. 2018.

The Fortran language has been steadily developing since its origins in
1957. Many people have been working on revising the Fortran
specification, resulting in Fortran 77, 90, 95, 2003, 2008 and 2018
standards. This survey is designed to find out exactly what benefits
newer Fortran standards bring to the community.

We would like to know how newer Fortran standards have increased the
quality of your code, cut development costs, increased portability or
performance of your code, or whether you can attach any monetary value
to the benefits enabled by modern Fortran standards.

This questionnaire contains 4 sections. All questions are optional.
It will take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Anton Shterenlikht, BCS Fortran Standards Officer

Subject: IMA Theoretical and Computational Discrete Mathematics, UK, Sep 2018

Friday 14 - Saturday 15 September 2018, The Enterprise Centre,
University of Derby

Discrete mathematics poses a wide range of challenging research
problems, giving rise to important applications in other fields such
as computer science, engineering, industry, business, finance and the
physical/biological sciences. It is a dynamic subject in which
techniques, theories and algorithms are drawn from many different
areas, and it offers a diverse and stimulating environment for those
whose work lies within it. This is a relatively new area that the IMA
is pleased to support through a second event of its kind at the
University of Derby.

The conference will showcase theoretical and computational advances in
the general field of discrete mathematics. It is open to researchers
working with mathematical structures and abstract constructs, and to
those involved in the theory and practise of discrete algorithmic
computing. The purpose of this event is to highlight progress in the
field through the development of novel theories, methodologies and
applications accordingly, and to inspire future work.

Such a meeting aims to assemble prominent and emerging researchers in
discrete mathematics to present new findings, and to gain a broader
snapshot of activity - we welcome the participation of graduate
students and early career mathematicians, as well as more established
academics. The conference seeks to bring together colleagues from the
many different arenas where discrete mathematics is developed and
applied, and it is hoped that personal collaborations will be both
encouraged and fostered as a result. Plenary and contributed talks
will be featured, as well as a poster presence.

Invited speakers: Professor Martin Bohner (Missouri University of
Science and Technology); Dr Sergey Kitaev (University of Strathclyde);
Professor Preda Mihailescu (Georg-August-University, Goettingen);
Professor Tom Ward (University of Leeds)

Registration is open via https://my.ima.org.uk/

From: Markus Bachmayr [log in to unmask]
Date: August 11, 2018
Subject: Postdoc Position, Numerical Analysis/UQ, JGU Mainz

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the Johannes
Gutenberg-University Mainz in the new research group of Prof. Markus
Bachmayr, with starting date as soon as possible.

Candidates should have a background in the numerical analysis of PDEs
and research interests in high-dimensional approximation, model order
reduction, and/or uncertainty quantification. Proficiency in
scientific programming is expected. The institute of mathematics at
JGU offers a stimulating research environment with opportunities for
interdisciplinary collaborations in the natural sciences.

This is a full position remunerated according to TV-L E 13. It comes
with the standard teaching load of 4 hours per week. As courses are to
be taught primarily in German, sufficient knowledge of German is
required.

The initial appointment will be for a period of two years, with the
possibility of an extension.

The Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz aims at increasing the
percentage of women in academic positions and strongly encourages
women scientists to apply. The university is an equal opportunity
employer and particularly welcomes applications from persons with
disabilities.

Applications including CV, list of publications, a research statement
(approximately 2-3 pages), a concise summary of teaching experience,
and contact details of at least two references should be submitted to
[log in to unmask] Informal inquiries are welcome. The
evaluation of applications will begin on August 31, 2018. Later
applications will be considered until the position is filled.

Date: August 07, 2018
Subject: PhD Position, Computational Fluid Dynamics / Machine Learning

We are seeking a Ph.D. student for the research project "Data-Driven
Analysis of Medical and Simulation Data for Improved Patient Treatment
in Rhinology"

The Institute of Aerodynamics and Chair of Fluid Mechanics (AIA)
performs excellent research in fundamental and applied Fluid Mechanics
and is internationally renowned for its cutting-edge research
achievements. The Institute's experimental facilities enable to
investigate turbulent, compressible, and incompressible flow in
technical and biomedical applications. The numerics group advances
research in various fields ranging from combustion processes to
respiratory flows. The Julich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates
one of the most powerful supercomputing infrastructures in Europe and
makes it available to researchers at Forschungszentrum Julich (FZJ),
in Germany, and throughout Europe. As part of this task JSC conducts
various types of Research and Development, often in close
collaboration with local, national and international partner
institutions. The Julich Aachen Research Alliance - High Performance
Computing (JARA-HPC) will together with other units from RWTH Aachen
University and FZJ be merged to become the JARA Center for Simulation
and Data Sciences (JARA-CSD), aiming at facilitating joint research,
education, and industry projects between the participating
institutions.

Your profile: very good university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent degree)
in one or more of the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Physics,
Mathematics, and/or Computer Science; experience in one/ideally in
more than one of these fields: (Computational) Fluid Dynamics, Machine
Learning, High-Performance Computing, Software Development, especially
in C++ and Python; solution-oriented, social, and independent
enthusiast with a strong interest for highly interdisciplinary
research and good communication and team skills.

Please send your application including a cover letter, a letter of
motivation, your CV, and your certificates to Dr. Andreas Lintermann,
Institute of Aerodynamics and Chair of Fluid Mechanics and JARA-HPC,
RWTH Aachen University, Wullnerstr. 5a, 52062 Aachen, Germany. We also
accept applications sent per email to [log in to unmask] aachen.de
