Dear Math Honors students,
Welcome back! I hope you had a productive summer, and that you’ll have an even more productive semester. I just want to remind you of a few things:
1. Math Honors students should be enrolled in Math 398 each semester they are in the honors concentration. This is a 0 credit hour course to verify that you satisfy the requirements of Math Honors.
2. Math Honors students should attend at least three math Junior Colloquiums (or other math talks) per semester. We do not have JCs every week, and sometimes not even every other week. This means that you should attend JCs whenever they are available, to make sure you went to at least three of them. You will always get a reminder from me or Ms. Murr a few days before a JC.
3. Do not make any changes to your schedule before consulting with me. If it’s urgent, we can discuss by email. If you want to meet in person just let me know when. I’m normally free on MWF except 12:20 - 1:10.
4. Math Honors students are encouraged to attend the Math Tea. You already got an email about it from the organizers. You will get weekly reminders when there is a tea. If for some reason you don’t want to be on this email list, just let the organizers know.
5. One of the benefits of Math Honors is that each student can have a mentor each semester. This is not mandatory, but you should take advantage of this opportunity to get to know the math professors, learn about what they do and about future career opportunities. Students normally meet with their mentors once a month, for half an hour. Do not hesitate to ask anyone from Math if they want to be your mentor. If you need suggestions finding a mentor, just get back to me.
6. If you are graduating this year, you should be enrolled in Math 497 this semester and take at least 3 hours of Math 498 for the year (unless you did so already). You should also let me know (by email) what are your plans for your honors thesis.
