Subject: Grid Optimization Competition has started

The ARPA-E unit of the Department of Energy has just started a
competition to solve Optimal Power Flow Problems.

There will be two phases (Challenges), the first one on the security
constrained OPF is expected to run until 8/2019. More information can
be found on the website https://gocompetition.energy.gov/

The Center for Computational Mathematics in the Department of
Mathematics and the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, University
of California, San Diego, La Jolla, California will host a two-day
Summer Workshop on Topics in Optimization, Differential Equations, and
Image Analysis, Thursday August 16-Friday August 17, 2018.

The workshop will feature a series of expository talks by UCSD
postdocs and faculty on the fundamentals of optimization, differential
equations, quantitative image processing, and genomic data
analysis. Topics will include the formulation of advanced optimization
algorithms, numerical methods for solving differential equations,
differential-equation-based image analysis, and data analysis.

The workshop is intended for both undergraduate and graduate
students. Funding is available for travel and lodging.
Underrepresented minorities and women are particularly encouraged to
register for the workshop. There will be no registration fee. For

Subject: Supercomputing (SC18) Doctoral Showcase, USA, Nov 2018

We invite submissions for the Doctoral Showcase program for
Supercomputing 2018. Unlike papers and poster presentations, a
Doctoral Showcase poster (called a thesis canvas) highlights the
entire contents of a dissertation, including previously published
results, to allow for a broad perspective of the work. The Doctoral
Showcase provides a unique opportunity for students nearing completion
of their PhD to present a summary of their dissertation research in
the form of talks and posters, and network with prospective employers.

Please see
https://sc18.supercomputing.org/submit/showcases-submissions/#section1
for details on submissions.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Firedrake Finite Element System, Imperial College London

We are looking for a Research Associate (postdoc) to join the
Firedrake core development team Imperial. The Firedrake project brings
a radical new approach to simulation software development. Instead of
painstakingly hand-coding highly sophisticated algorithms one PhD at a
time, Firedrake models the simulation creation process as a sequence
of mathematical abstractions and develops specialised compilers to
automatically translate from one to the next, thereby automatically
generating high performance parallel code from a high-level
specification of the original mathematical problem.

This position represents the opportunity for a computational scientist
to create new abstractions and implementations resulting in new
simulation capability with immediate impact over a diverse user
base. The successful candidate will play an important role in the
heart of the Firedrake project while enjoying considerable freedom to
develop their own programme of computational science research based
around the further development of Firedrake.

For further details, see

Subject: PhD Position, Model Reduction for Bayesian Inversion

The new DFG International Research Training Group (IRTG) 2379 builds
on a unique consortium, at RWTH Aachen University with its Aachen
Institute of Advanced Study in Computational Engineering Science, and
at the University of Texas at Austin with its Institute for
Computational Engineering and Sciences. The projects are embedded in
the field of modern inverse problems and introduce a new innovative
perspective into the education of future scientists and engineers.

The advertised position is associated with the project "Model order
reduction for goal-oriented Bayesian inversion," and is advised
jointly by Prof. K. Veroy-Grepl at RWTH Aachen and Prof. T. Bui-Thanh
at UT Austin. In this project, we focus on goal-oriented Bayesian
inversion of problems governed by parametrized partial differential
equations, particularly for applications involving high-dimensional
parameter spaces.

The research goals of this project are:
- Reduction of the computational cost to solve Bayesian inverse
problems governed by partial differential equations.
- Quantification of the uncertainty caused by the use of surrogate
  reduced-order models.
- Application to large-scale inverse problems with high-dimensional
parameter spaces, e.g., in the geosciences.

Our offer: The candidate will be a regular employee and must meet
required personal qualifications. This is a full-time position with a
civil service pay scale TV-L E13. The expected appointment period is
three years starting October 2018. Full involvement in the IRTG
activities, including joint RWTH-UT colloquia, annual workshops and
schools, and short courses is expected. A six- month research stay at
University of Texas in Austin is part of the training program.
Applications are being reviewed now until the position is filled.

Your profile: Requirement for this position is a master's degree in
computational engineering science, engineering, applied mathematics,
computer science, physics, or a similar subject with a superior
academic record. Practical programming experience in Matlab, Python,
C, or C++ is advantageous. Excellent written and spoken English
language skills are required.

Please send application documents in a single PDF file containing
curriculum vitae, letter of motivation and research interests,
transcript of records, and contact information of at least two
references to [log in to unmask] with the subject "IRTG 2379 -
Application".
