Behind the Numbers is a Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) quarterly webinar
series providing insight into the collection, analysis, dissemination, and usage of
transportation statistics.
Overview:
BTS has recently modernized its Border Crossing and TransBorder Freight Data
programs. Although they are separate data programs, both provide an invaluable and
unique view of North American trade and transportation from passenger to freight
flows. Border Crossing Data provide users with comprehensive monthly and annual
incoming vehicle, container, passenger and pedestrian entry count information for all
U.S. border ports of entry from Canada and Mexico. The TransBorder Freight Data
provide North American merchandise trade and freight data by commodity type, by
mode of transportation (rail, truck, air, water, pipeline, mail and other), and with
geographic detail for U.S. exports to and imports from Canada and Mexico. The data
are being used for trade corridor studies, transportation infrastructure planning,
marketing and logistics analyses, and other purposes.
During this webinar, Steven Beningo of BTS will show how customers can use the
interactive TransBorder Freight Data dashboards to visualize cross border freight
movements. In addition, new query tools for both the Border Crossing and
TransBorder Freight data sets will be shown.
Steven Beningo works as a Transportation Specialist in the Bureau of Transportation
Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation. In his current position, Mr.
Beningo works on international transportation data programs. He manages the
TransBorder Freight Data Program, which involves data on U.S. trade with Canada and
Mexico by mode of transportation. In addition, Mr. Beningo works on border crossing
data, serves as the Secretary of the Transportation Research Board’s International
Trade and Transportation Committee, as the Chair of the Transportation Energy and
Environmental Indicators Working Group of the North American Transportation
Statistics Interchange, as the Co-Chair of the Trade and Traffic Data Committee of the
Transportation Border Working Group, and functions as the BTS Liaison to the
Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office’s Connected Data Systems
Program.
