SIAM is now accepting entries for the James H. Wilkinson Prize for
Numerical Software. The prize is awarded every four years to the
authors of an outstanding piece of numerical software. It is intended
to recognize innovative software in scientific computing and to
encourage researchers in the earlier stages of their career.
SIAM will award the Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software at the SIAM
Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE19). The award
will consist of $3,000 and a plaque. As part of the award, the
recipient(s) will be expected to present a lecture at the conference.
Entry Deadline: June 1, 2018

Subject: New Book, Math Modeling: Computing and Communicating
Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), organizer of
the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge), has just
announced publication of an new, freely available handbook:
Math Modeling: Computing and Communicating
K. M. Bliss, K. F. Kavanagh, and B. J. Galluzzo, and R. Levy
SIAM, Philadelphia, 2018
Free online; $15 in print
Written for students who have some experience with computation and an
interest in math modeling, this handbook is designed to take you from
basic graphic calculator or spreadsheet experience to the next level,
which includes programming basics, working with large data sets, and
visualization techniques. The handbook is also written for teachers
who will assist students as they incorporate software into the math
modeling process. This is a companion volume to Math Modeling:
Getting Started and Getting Solutions (SIAM, 2014), and takes you
beyond the basic process of mathematical modeling to technical
computing using software platforms and coding.
Topics include computation, statistics, visualization, programming,
and simulation.
Both handbooks are freely available for viewing or download at the M3
Challenge site: https://m3challenge.siam.org/resources/modeling-
handbook ; you will also find a link there for purchase of print
copies if that is desired.

The second outreach workshop "Frontiers of Uncertainty Quantification"
(FrontUQ) organized by the GAMM Activity Group on Uncertainty
Quantification will be held on September 5-7, 2018 in Pavia, Italy
with focus on Uncertainty Quantification in Subsurface Environments
(https://frontuq18.org). Subsurface environments host natural
resources which are critical to the needs of our society and to its
development. The diversity of problems encountered in subsurface
modeling calls for multi-disciplinary research efforts, with
contributions from a wide range of fields including, e.g.,
mathematics, hydrology, geology, physics and biogeochemistry. We
welcome contributions from researchers with different backgrounds
active in the area, presenting both advances in dedicated uncertainty
quantification techniques and real-world test cases. Contributions can
be submitted as poster or oral presentation. A limited amount of
funding is provided by GAMM for researchers who do not yet hold
permanent positions. Interested participants are encouraged to contact

Subject: Postdoc Position, Math Modelling and Scientific Computing, McMaster
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship position in the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University. This
fellowship provides an opportunity to engage in research in close
collaboration with Dr. Protas and his group (more information
available at http://www.math.mcmaster.ca/bprotas ) with a limited
amount of teaching. The focus of this industry-cofunded position will
be research on mathematical and computational modelling of
nonequilibrium electrochemical and thermodynamic processes occurring
in Li-ion batteries. This position is intended for an applied
mathematician interested in exploring a rapidly developing application
area, or for a mathematically-minded chemist with a solid background
in theoretical and computational chemistry. In either case, knowledge
of multiscale modelling (especially homogenization), electrochemistry,
PDEs and scientific computing will be an asset. This research project
also involves close collaboration with chemists and material
scientists as well as research scientists with our Industrial
Partner. The duration of the position will be initially one year with
extension for the second year contingent on satisfactory performance
and availability of funding.
The fellowship is open to candidates of any nationality and selection
will be based on the candidate's research potential and fit with
Dr. Protas' research group. The fellowship starts on September 1, 2018
or earlier, and provides an annual stipend salary of $42,000
CAD. Candidates are required to apply for this fellowship by using the
MathJobs website (see our advertisement with ID McMaster-PDFMMSC
[#11767] at http://www.mathjobs.org). We will begin reviewing
applications on March 22, 2018. Applications received after this date
will be accepted until the position is filled, but to ensure full
consideration applicants are advised to submit all supporting
materials by the above deadline.

A new PhD fellowship/Postdoctoral fellowship in computational science
is available at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU. The
successful candidate will be offered a three-year position as a PhD
fellow or a two-year position as a postdoctoral fellow.
The research project is about data driven modelling of flexible
structures. There are numerous potential applications for this
research, examples are animation of character motion, activity
recognition and modelling of slender structures. We will use
techniques based on differential geometry and in particular shape
analysis on Lie groups and homogeneous manifolds. We seek candidates
with a good mathematical background at master/PhD level or equivalent.
