Behind the Numbers is a Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) quarterly webinar series
providing insight into the collection, analysis, dissemination, and usage of transportation
statistics.
Overview:
Since the official management order that made BTS official was signed on December 16,
1992, the Agency has made leaps and bounds in its ability to store, collect, analyze, and
distribute data. From conducting surveys rather than simply compiling others’ data and
producing a wide range of reports and data products, to creating the National
Transportation Library out of a small project, BTS has continued to grow and deliver on its
mission of being a leading source of timely, accurate, and reliable information on U.S.
transportation systems.
During this webinar, Rolf Schmitt of BTS will provide a historical account of how BTS
developed over the last 25 years, how the agency functions today, and its future goals. Dr.
Schmitt is the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. He returned to
the Bureau in 2012 after 12 years in the freight and operations offices of the Federal
Highway Administration. He helped establish BTS in 1992, and served as its Associate
Director for Transportation Studies until 2000.
Following Dr. Schmitt’s presentation, Sean Jahanmir, transportation analyst of the BTS
Office of Transportation Analysis will dive into some example of data collected by BTS over
time. Mr. Jahanmir's focus areas are mainly on North American Freight Transportation data,
including vehicle and pedestrian Border Crossing counts, merchandise flow data, and
international multimodal freight transportation data analysis.
