Behind the Numbers is a Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) quarterly webinar series 
providing insight into the collection, analysis, dissemination, and usage of transportation 
statistics.

Overview:
With a mission to improve safety on nation’s highways and reduce fatalities and injuries 
associated with vehicle crashes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 
(NHTSA) issues Federal motor vehicle safety standards on all vehicle and vehicle parts 
entering the United States. Each standard establishes minimum safety performance 
requirements for items of motor vehicle equipment.

During this webinar, Coleman Sachs of NHTSA will provide a background on standards and 
procedure related to importing motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts to the United States. 
For the past fifteen years, Mr. Sachs has been the Chief of the Import and Certification 
Division within the agency’s Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance (OVSC), which is the 
Division principally responsible for regulating the importation. Following Coleman’s 
presentation, Sean Jahanmir of the BTS Office of Transportation Analysis will demonstrate 
how BTS collects and analyzes motor vehicle and motor vehicle part import data.
