Job Description
SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Every 3rd Saturday 1:00 p.m. –
5:00 p.m.
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to monitor the
ordering and processing of all books, magazines, maps and microforms added to the
McClung Historical Collection. Duties include, but are not limited to: supervising staff;
preparing records; assisting patrons; maintaining files; cataloging and classifying books,
maps and magazines; and performing other duties as assigned by the McClung Historical
Collection Manager/County Historian.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not
to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, handling employee concerns and
problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining and completing employee performance
appraisals. Catalogs and classifies monographs, maps, magazines and manuscript items
in accordance with current descriptive cataloging practices (AACR II) and with standards
required for participation in OCLC through the Library's membership in LYRASIS. Prepares
original catalog records for input in OCLC. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of
cataloging and classification rule changes and departmental files of McClung Technical
Services Library publications. Works the public desk in the read room; provides reference
assistance to patrons as needed. Assists with material selections by monitoring journals
and making recommendations. Supervises bindery shipments of bindery, and
billing/payment for bindery. Supervises minor repairs to books carried out by McClung
Technical Services Assistant. Maintains stacks in orderly fashion; reads shelves as
needed.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Serves on Library Committees and task groups as
requested. Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central
office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County
Department of Health. Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an
ALA accredited college of university; with two (2) years of experience in a Library
environment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which
provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of office
machines, such as a telephone, copier, calculator, microfilm reader/printer, book trucks,
etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.
Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
