Subject: LAFF again!

On Aug. 1 2017, we will again offer "Linear Algebra: Foundations to
Frontiers" (LAFF) on the edX platform (edx.org). LAFF is an
introductory course on linear algebra that links abstractions in
mathematics to abstractions in code. The course targets many
audiences, ranging from novices to those wanting a refresher. Some
take it as a semester-long course. Others finish it in a few weeks.

We have used these resources in a number of different ways:
- As an alternative to a traditional textbook for an introductory
undergraduate linear algebra course targeting students with
  computational interests.
- As resources for those who want to pursue research with us.
- As background/reference materials for a Numerical Linear Algebra
  graduate level course.

Importantly, the course stresses abstractions like partitioning of
matrices and layering of operations similar to how linear algebra
libraries layer in terms of the BLAS. Many of the "enrichments"
introduce concepts in HPC.

For links, details, reviews, notes, videos, and activities, visit
http://www.ulaff.net. There you will also find my "Notes on Numerical
Linear Algebra."

Subject: Release of StochSS Version 1.9

StochSS: Stochastic Simulation Service is an integrated development
environment for modeling and simulation of discrete stochastic
biochemical systems. An easy-to-use GUI enables researchers to quickly
develop and simulate biological models on a desktop or laptop, which
can then be expanded or combined to incorporate increasing levels of
complexity. As the demand for computational power increases, StochSS
is able to seamlessly scale up by deploying cloud computing
resources. The software currently supports simulation of ODE and
well-mixed discrete stochastic models, parameter estimation of
discrete stochastic models, and simulation of spatial stochastic
models.

New capabilities of Version 1.9 include:
1. Support for simulation and parameter sweep jobs on batch cluster
computing (i.e. Qsub based computing clusters)
2. Configuration of batch computing resources
3. Enhancements to multi-user setup, including email authentication

For more details and instructions on how to obtain the code, visit us
at http://www.StochSS.org , and to try it in a cloud-computing environment, go
to http://try.StochSS.org .

Subject: New Book, A Taste of Inverse Problems

A Taste of Inverse Problems: Basic Theory and Examples, Martin Hanke
viii + 162 pages / Softcover / 978-1-611974-93-5 / List Price $59.00 /
SIAM Member Price $41.30 / OT153

Inverse problems need to be solved in order to properly interpret
indirect measurements. Often, inverse problems are ill-posed and
sensitive to data errors. Therefore one has to incorporate some sort
of regularization to reconstruct significant information from the
given data.

This book presents the main achievements that have emerged in
regularization theory over the past 50 years, focusing on linear
ill-posed problems and the development of methods that can be applied
to them. Some of this material has previously appeared only in
journal articles.

A Taste of Inverse Problems: Basic Theory and Examples rigorously
discusses state-of-the-art inverse problems theory, focusing on
numerically relevant aspects and omitting subordinate generalizations;
presents diverse real-world applications, important test cases, and
possible pitfalls; and treats these applications with the same rigor
and depth as the theory.

contents, preface, and index, please visit

New from Princeton University Press

The Mathematics of Various Entertaining Subjects:
Research in Games, Graphs, Counting, and Complexity, Volume 2
Edited by Jennifer Beineke & Jason Rosenhouse
With a foreword by Ron Graham
ISBN: 9780691171920
Price: $85.00 | 70.95 GBP

The history of mathematics is filled with major breakthroughs
resulting from solutions to recreational problems. Problems of
interest to gamblers led to the modern theory of probability, for
example, and surreal numbers were inspired by the game of Go. Yet even
with such groundbreaking findings and a wealth of popular-level books,
research in recreational mathematics has often been neglected. The
Mathematics of Various Entertaining Subjects now returns with a
brand-new compilation of fascinating problems and solutions in
recreational mathematics.

Subject: IMA Conference on Mathematics in Defence, UK, Nov 2017

In conjunction with The Sandhurst Trust
Thursday 23 November 2017, The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst

Science and technology play an increasingly important role in
supporting the defence industry. Mathematics is fundamental to these
two disciplines, providing a framework for understanding and solving
the varied and complex problems faced, and to model systems and
scenarios. These models are then used to estimate system performance,
find weaknesses in real systems, and suggest improvements. This
conference brings together a wide variety of mathematical methods with
defence and security applications. The programme will include keynote
speakers, presentations and poster sessions, as well as refreshment
breaks for informal discussions. It is aimed towards mathematicians,
scientists and engineers from both industry and academia, in addition
to government and military personnel who have an interest in how
mathematics can be applied to defence problems.

Topics covered include (but are not limited to) the following: Data
Science and Machine Learning; Signal Processing; Modelling and
Estimation; Statistical Methods; Operational Analysis; Cyber-physical
Systems; Security

Invited speakers: Tony O’Connor CBE FORS (Chief Analyst, Ministry of
Defence), Dr. Simon Shiu (Director of Security Labs, HP)

Subject: Postdoc Position, Mathematics on Materials for Energy, Univ Bath

An EU-funded research position is available at the University of Bath
to accelerate Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) Methods for Novel Solar Cell
Design (EU Horizon2020 Energy Oriented Centre of Excellence, EoCoE).
The aim of the project at Bath is a multiscale study of novel
perovskite solar cell materials. The postdoc will join an
interdisciplinary team lead by Prof A Walker (Physics), including Prof
R Scheichl and Dr K Yates (Mathematics), as well as Prof S Islam
(Chemistry).

In the remaining 12 months of the project, using the parameters
obtained from atomistic simulations at the microscale, work will focus
on predicting device behaviour using KMC simulations at the mesoscale,
computing current-voltage characteristics, charge mobilities, etc.

KMC is closely related to the Gillespie algorithm. Walker is one of
the leading researchers in the development and application of
KMC. This project will focus on 'reengineering' the computationally
intensive parts of KMC with a view of improving the overall
performance and making them more suited to supercomputers with high
concurrency. In particular, we intend to investigate novel multilevel
Monte Carlo ideas, as well as fast, parallel Poisson solvers for the
modelling of long-range interactions. The postdoc will be based in the
Department of Mathematical Sciences.

This is a fixed term position with an anticipated end date of 30
September 2018. Interviews are scheduled for 6th and 8th September
(via Skype). To apply for the position or to obtain more details about
the application process please refer to

From: George Constantinides [log in to unmask]
Date: August 03, 2017
Subject: Postdoc/ PhD Position, Imperial College

Fixed-term appointment for one year

We are aiming to develop exciting approximate arithmetic techniques to
trade off the cost of a numerical computation (time taken, area and
energy in hardware) against the probability of correctness, focusing
on applications containing a Boolean function where the 'wrong' answer
creates an overhead (e.g. wasted computation). This is part of a
broader research vector, in which we are interested in the general
problem of synthesising an approximation P' to a known program P
minimizing a metric defined over the difference between these two
programs subject to constraints on the area, performance and energy of
P'.

During the one year of appointment, the applicant will have the
opportunity - should they so wish - to work with the academic
investigators to put together a longer-term grant proposal in this
field and to engage with industrial partners.

Appointments can be made either at Research Assistant or Research
Associate level. For the latter, applicants must already hold a PhD
(or equivalent). In the former case, applicants will be eligible to
register for a PhD programme should they so wish.
