GIS and Maps Librarian, University of Chicago Library, Posting 033807

The GIS and Maps Librarian will provide reference, consultation, and instruction to support the use of geospatial data and tools. The Librarian will support faculty and students in all disciplines and with a variety of needs, interests and abilities. They will play a critical role in the development of the Library's GIS program and work closely with colleagues to provide an array of geospatial data and research support services.

The Librarian will assist users with acquiring, manipulating, or querying of geospatial data, and work collaboratively with Library staff and with other campus experts to improve accessibility to digital geospatial resources and to plan for preservation of digital geospatial assets. They will provide instruction in GIS software applications and develop online  resources to aid users. They will lead planning and implementation of GIS-oriented professional development for subject librarians and will partner with subject librarians to understand practices of researchers in various fields relating to geospatial data creation, use, and preservation.

The Librarian is responsible for managing the Map Collection, including supervising a Resident Librarian for GIS, Map Collection Assistant, and part time student employees. One of the largest university map libraries in North America, the Map Collection contains over 475,000 maps, 10,000 air photos,
2000 books, and hundreds of gigabytes of spatial data. The Librarian will be a partner with the Technical Services Department, supporting the provision of metadata for geospatial resources.

The Librarian will report to the Director of Research and Teaching Support and participate in reference services. They are expected to develop expertise in one or more areas of current and emerging importance in academic libraries, such as scholarly communication, copyright, or data management. Other responsibilities include service on library and university committees and task forces, and participation in professional and scholarly organizations.

The successful candidate must have an MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited school of library information science or an advanced subject degree in an appropriate discipline (degrees must be completed by start date of employment); undergraduate or demonstrated equivalent subject experience in geography or a related field; minimum of 3 years library experience; knowledge of one or more desktop or cloud-based GIS software applications. Knowledge of one or more computer programming languages is strongly preferred. Familiarity with one or more statistical and/or qualitative analysis software packages and one or more non-English languages are preferred.

The Search Committee will evaluate candidates’ ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, their ability to perform complex problem solving and decision making, ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects, and their demonstrated commitment to professional development. The committee will evaluate their knowledge of and experience with GIS applications and geospatial data resources, experience in public service, customer service, and teaching environments, and experience with web authoring.
