Subject: BBComp: Black-Box Optimization Competition, Call for participation

The Black Box Optimization Competition (BBComp,
http://bbcomp.ini.rub.de/) has just opened FIVE NEW TRACKS in the
domains of single- and multi-objective optimization. The competition
is organized in the scope of the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation
Conference (GECCO'2017, http://gecco-2017.sigevo.org/)

BBComp is the first competition platform in the continuous domain
where test problems are truly black boxes to participants. The only
information known to the optimizer and participant is the dimension of
the problem, bounds on all variables, and a budget of black box
queries.

The competition is also the first web/online optimization competition
in evolutionary computation domain, it aims at attacking a growing
impact of over-fitting of optimization algorithms to a narrow set of
existing benchmark problems. The competition was run four times so
far, attracting more than 100 unique submissions, including some
state-of-the-art commercial solvers.

All the material including the source code in C/C++, MATLAB, Python
and Java is available at http://bbcomp.ini.rub.de . The results of the
competition will be announced during GECCO'2017. Participants do not
need to attend the conference or submit papers, they can even choose
to be anonymous to the other participants.

Subject: Generative models, parameter learning and sparsity, UK, Oct-Nov 2017

Attend this workshop at the Isaac Newton Institute and interact and
engage while working on the review, exchange and promoting of recent
advances in generative models, parameter learning and sparsity. A key
issue in image reconstruction, and in inverse problems as a whole, is
the correct choice of image priors (or regularisation functionals) and
data models (or fidelity terms) in a variational or Bayesian
reconstruction model. Depending on the setup of the model, very
different qualitative image reconstruction results are obtained. This
workshop will cover many topics around this - Read more here. This is
the second event and part of the activities for a long term programme
on Variational methods and effective algorithms for imaging and vision
(1 Sept-- 31 Dec 2017) organised by Ke Chen, Andrew Fitzgibbon,
Michael Hintermuller, Carola-Bibiane Schonlieb, and Xue-Cheng Tai.

Baraniuk, J Calder, J Chung, J Delon, M Figueiredo, E Haber, A Hansen,

Subject: Postdoc Position, Georg-August-Univ Göttingen

The Research Training Group RTG 2088 "Discovering Structure in Complex
Data: Statistics Meets Optimization and Inverse Problems" (Speaker:
Prof. Gerlind Plonka-Hoch) at the Georg-August University Gottingen
offers a PostDoc Position from August 1, 2017-March 31, 2020. The
salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale
(E13 TV-L) with 100% of the regular working hours (currently 39.8
hours per week). The research projects in this RTG focus on new
mathematical concepts for the efficient reconstruction and
classification of relevant structural information in data sets,
without reconstructing the entire information inherent in the
data. One of the guiding principles of this RTG consists of
discovering and rigorously exploiting structural a priori information
in order to obtain the desired information. Methodically, specific
emphasis will be laid upon the interplay between approaches in
statistics, optimization, and inverse problems. Most of the proposed
PhD projects arise from signal or image processing applications in
biology, medicine or engineering. We are looking for a postdoc having
strong expertise related to at least one of the fields inverse
problems, optimization, mathematical statistics, data analysis,
probability theory, computational topology or mathematical signal and
image processing, but showing considerable breadth in her/his previous
research and a willingness to explore new topics.

Candidates should fulfill the following requirements: An excellent
doctorate in mathematics and a strong publication record; A strong
background in one of the mathematical disciplines covered by the RTG;
Very good English skills (written and spoken); Willingness to work in
interdisciplinary teams; Good programming skills are beneficial.

The University of Gottingen is an equal opportunities employer and
places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for
women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in
fields in which they are underrepresented. The university has
committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports
their employees in balancing work and family life. The mission of the
University is to employ a greater number of severely disabled
persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent
qualifications will be given preference. Please send your application
with the usual documents until June 5, 2017 either per letter mail to,
Georg-August-University Gottingen, Prof. Gerlind Plonka-Hoch,
Lotzestr. 16-18, 37083 Gottingen, Germany or directly per e-mail to
Prof. Plonka-Hoch: [log in to unmask] goettingen.de. Electronical
applications are preferred.

From: Gabriel Lord [log in to unmask]
Date: May 03, 2017
Subject: Postdoc Position, MCMC Methods, Heriot-Watt Univ, Edinburgh, UK

The position is part of the EPSRC funded EQUIP project between Warwick
University, Imperial College and Heriot-Watt. The key academic staff
in EQUIP are Professors Andrew Stuart (now at CalTech), Charlie Elliot
and Gareth Roberts (Warwick), Mark Girolami (Imperial) and Mike
Christie (Heriot-Watt).

The goal of the EQUIP project is to make significant advances in
methodology for uncertainty quantification that can be applied to
realistic large engineering problems. The difficulty in handling the
computational challenges involved in large engineering problems is
driving advances in techniques such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)
methods.

Applications must have considerable experience in mathematical
modelling and MCMC techniques. Experience of multilevel and
multi-fidelity approaches will be an advantage.

Subject: PhD Position, Computational Physiology, Univ of Zurich, Switzerland

A funded doctoral position in the general areas of computational
physiology and biomedical engineering is available at the Interface
Group of the Institute of Physiology, University of Zurich,
Switzerland: http://interfacegroup.ch/

Combining clinical meta-analysis and computational modeling, this
project aims at refining our understanding of the coupling between
cardiovascular and renal function in health and diseases, accounting
for its complex hormonal and biomechanical inter-regulations. Of
specific interest is the understanding of the evolution in renal and
cardiac function in patients undergoing renal transplant.

The Ph.D. student will work within the Swiss national flagship project
NCCR Kidney.CH (www.nccr-kidney.ch) and in tight collaboration with
the University Hospitals of Bern, Geneva and Zurich; at the interface
between fundamental physiology and clinical applications.

The ideal candidate will have expert knowledge in numerical methods
and in systems and controls with emphasis on their application to
physiological systems. Knowledge of the cardiovascular and renal
anatomy and physiology is of advantage. A master's degree in
engineering, computational sciences or a related field and excellent
English language skills are mandatory.

The Interface Group offers a creative, international work environment,
outstanding computational infrastructure, integration into a large
research network and access to experimental and clinical data for
model parametrization.

Candidates are encouraged to apply to Dr. Diane de Zelicourt,
