Subject: PhD Position, Computer Models of Atrial Fibrillation, New Zealand

Atrial fibrillation (AF), leading to an irregular and rapid heart rate
in the smaller/upper chambers of the heart, is the most common
sustained heart rhythm disturbance. AF is associated with substantial
morbidity and mortality. However, the current clinical treatment for
AF is suboptimal. The PhD student will develop image-based
mathematical/computer models by including the most accurately measured
human functional and structural data and use them to investigate the
basic mechanisms behind AF and the effective ablation strategy for AF
termination. The proposed project is part of an international
collaboration.

The ideal candidates will have a Masters' or a Bachelors' degree with
Honours (Second Class Honours, Division One or better) in Engineering
or Mathematics, and are good at least one computer language
(Matlab/C/C++/Fortran). The candidate needs to be passionate about
research. To apply, please send his or her detailed CV to the
Principal Supervisor Dr. Jichao Zhao (Email: [log in to unmask]).

We have research funding from the Health Research Council of New
Zealand that will cover tuition fees and provide an annual tax-free
living allowance for the enrolled PhD student at the University of
Auckland, New Zealand, for three years, with possible extension for a
further year.
