Letter from the President
[Heather Beck]
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter.
Try again. Fail again.
Fail better.
A quote about failure might not be everyone’s idea of a heartwarming way to start a new year, but it’s mine. To be fair, no one would ever mistake Samuel Beckett or me as an optimist. But I think I am one anyway.
Because the truth is, everyone does fail.
Our reputations or brands might be dragged through the mud. A crisis might blow up in our faces. The media may lambast us. The last emergency of the day might be the emergency that breaks our backs. It happens. (The optimism is coming — I promise you.)
Because the next time I fail, I will fail better.
My goals in life used to run along the lines of “at least try not to fall.” Now, my goals are more along the lines of “fail spectacularly.”
Because I always did fail. I always will fail. But that does not mean I do not learn. I have learned from every mistake I’ve ever made, and each of my failures now is better than the last one. Now, because my goal is to fail big or go home, my dreams are better and more audacious. I want more. And in the end, I accomplish more.
This quote has become my unofficial motto as I step up as president of the Volunteer Chapter. I hope it inspires you too — even if in a strange way.
Fail spectacularly. And then let’s do it again.
Heather Beck, APR
2017 PRSA Volunteer Chapter President

Speaker Series Moves to Second Tuesday of Each Month
Members of the Volunteer Chapter of PRSA enjoyed some wonderful professional development opportunities and networking events in 2016, including a speaker series that featured experts on topics ranging from crisis management to building brands. We hope to continue the success of last year’s programming by bringing in more interesting speakers, hosting more social events and providing more opportunities to connect with fellow practitioners.
We’ll continue to have our monthly luncheons at Rothchild Catering and Conference Center (8807 Kingston Pike) but we will now meet on the SECOND Tuesday of each month starting in February. We will not be meeting in January.
Please check the events page<http://volunteerprsa.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0fd71851400d22c81acced107&id=3e2657daf6&e=cffa884580> on our website and keep an eye out for emails announcing upcoming events. February Luncheon: Keep Calm and Go Practice
While many of us made New Year’s resolutions that included some mix of health improvements and lifestyle changes, how many of us made commitments to sharpen our public relations skills and thought processes? At our February meeting, we’re going to shake things up a bit with an interactive workshop designed to get us thinking outside the box. Working in small groups, we’ll tackle real life public relations challenges that don’t have easy answers. If you enjoy discussing case studies and learning from your peers (or you just need a break from your usual day-to-day responsibilities) you won’t want to miss this thought-provoking luncheon.
Where: Rothchild Catering and Conference Center (8807 Kingston Pike)
When: Thursday, February 9. Networking begins at 11:30 a.m.; lunch begins at noon
Cost: $20 members/$25 non-members/$15 students payable by cash, check or credit.
RSVP: Please RSVP online<http://volunteerprsa.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0fd71851400d22c81acced107&id=83a87f9036&e=cffa884580> by Friday, February 3
