Greetings Everyone!
Just wanted to remind you that over documentation could be considered a
form of discrimination. Always give the employee a copy of the Acceptable
List of Documents. There are 26 acceptable documents for the employee to
choose from. For a citizen, we can accept ONE List A document OR a
combination of ONE List B document AND One List C document, but NOT a
combination of the three. For a noncitizen presenting a COMBINATION List A
document: unexpired Passport, I-94 and one of the following (depending on
the VISA type): F-1: I-20, J-1: DS-2019 or H-1B.
List A documents establish BOTH Identity and Employment Authorization
List B documents establish Identity
List C documents establish Employment Authorization
While you are not required to be a document expert, all documents presented
to you must be *original (no photo copies). *Birth certificates must be
certified copies, not hospital or the Mother’s copy. Look for a raised or
embossed seal and the Registrars signature. Also remember that ALL List B
documents MUST have a photo. If in doubt, you can contact me or refer to
the Handbook for Employers (M-274) at www.uscis.gov
