Greetings Everyone!

It has come to our attention there seems to be some confusion on the dates
for the Form I-9. Below I have listed some I-9 guidelines:

Once an employee has been offered and accepted a position, the employee
may complete their Form I-9. The employee MUST complete Section One of
the Form I-9 ON or BEFORE their first physical day of employment.

The employer has 3 days to complete Section 2 of the Form I-9.

There are three date fields on the Form I-9:

1. The date the employee signs and dates the Form I-9 (ON or BEFORE their
first PHYSICAL day of work )
2. The date the employer (you) sign and date the form (Within 3 days)
3. The Certification date, which would be the FIRST PHYSICAL DAY OF
EMPLOYMENT

-Presumably, dates #1 and #2 should be the SAME date because the
employee signs and dates acknowledging that he/she showed you their
documents and attested to the info they reported on the form AND you’re
acknowledging by signing and dating that you verified the documents the
employee showed you, which presumably would have occurred on the same
day, at the same time.

-The Certification date is the employee’s actual FIRST PHYSCIAL DAY OF
WORK. The date that you sign the I-9 should NEVER be more than 3 working
days AFTER the certification date.

The start date on your hire form should ALWAYS MATCH the Certification
date on your I-9 EXCEPT in cases of 9-MONTH APPOINTMENTS. For 9-month
appointments, you will make the start date on your hire form 8/1 or, 1/1 or
2/1 (depending on semester) but your Certification date on the I-9 will be the
ACTUAL FIRST DAY THE EMPLOYEE BEGINS THEIR WORK ASSIGNMENT, BUT
NO LATER THAN THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS which is August 17, 2016 for the
current semester.

Here is a link to I-9 Central to watch videos and read or print information
guiding you how to complete the Form I-9:https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-
