Vijay Shankar, a retired Vice Admiral in the Indian Navy will be speaking on "Taking the
Deterrent to the Sea: Security Dynamics in the Indo-Pacific Region" on Friday June 3 at 3:30
pm in the Board Room of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy.
Vice Admiral Shankar commanded the INS Viraat aircraft carrier and oversaw missions
during the 1971 war with Pakistan, during India's peacekeeping operations in Sri Lanka, and
during the 1999 dispute in Kargil. He is currently on the adjunct faculty at the National
Institute of Advanced Studies in Bangalore, a collaborating institution with the UT
Department of Political Science through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding.
He has recently assisted with the Indo-Sino-Pak trilateral dialogue and serves as a
Distinguished Fellow at the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies in New Delhi.
