Subject: Finite Element Software deal.II Version 8.4.0 released

Version 8.4.0 of deal.II, the object-oriented finite element library
awarded the J. H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software, has been
released. It is available for free under an Open Source license from
the deal.II homepage at https://www.dealii.org/

The major changes of this release are:
- Parallel triangulations can now be partitioned with cell weights.
- Improved support for complex numbers throughout the library.
- A new triangulation type that supports parallel computations but
ensures that the entire mesh is available on every processor.
- New Rannacher-Turek and Q(p) bubble enriched finite elements
- Initial support for compiling with Visual C++ under Windows.
- See the preprint at https://www.dealii.org/deal84-preprint.pdf
- More than 140 other features and bugfixes, see the full list of
  changes at
  https://www.dealii.org/8.4.0/doxygen/deal.II/changes_between_8_3_and_8_4.html

The main features of deal.II are:
- Extensive documentation and 52 working example programs
- Support for dimension-independent programming
- Locally refined adaptive meshes and multigrid support
- A zoo of different finite elements
- Built-in support for shared memory and distributed parallel
computing, scaling from laptops to clusters with 10,000s of
  processor cores
- Interfaces to Trilinos, PETSc, METIS, UMFPACK and other external
  software
- Output for a wide variety of visualization platforms.

Subject: Postdoc Positions, Mathematics, Imperial College London

Two postdoctoral research associate positions are available at the
Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London. We have recently
secured funding from EPSRC to develop our capability in stochastic
geophysical fluid dynamics. In a recent paper,
http://rspa.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/royprsa/471/2176/20140963.full.pdf
the PI, Prof Darryl Holm, presented a general approach to including
stochastic parameterisations of subgrid motions in geophysical fluid
dynamics PDEs that are used to model the atmosphere and ocean. In this
project with co-Is Prof Dan Crisan and Dr Colin Cotter, we shall
investigate the properties of these models, their numerical
discretisations, and their incorporation into data
assimilation/stochastic filtering problems. One PDRA will focus on
numerical analysis and scientific computing:
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ANF380/research-associate-position/ whilst
the other will focus on data assimilation and stochastic filtering:
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ANF364/research-associate/ Please see these
adverts for job specifications. Interested NA Digest readers are
welcome to contact Colin Cotter ([log in to unmask]) for more
information regarding this project and these positions. Closing date
for applications for both positions is 11th April 2016. We aim to
start both positions before 1st July 2016.

problems arising in theoretical chemistry, physics and material
science with focus on a solid mathematical framework. Many projects of
the group are interdisciplinary.

For all positions, excellent knowledge about numerical aspects in
simulations, typically arising from discretisation schemes of partial
differential equations or eigenvalue problems, is expected as well as
good programming skills. For further details, including the scientific
