Wow - March has flown by and we have an even busier month of April!

We are finalizing details for an April 19, 4 PM - Howard Baker Memorial Lecture with
Chairman of NEDO (New Energy & Industrial Technology Development Organization),
Kazuo Furukawa. Mr. Furukawa is the former chairman of Hitachi and NEDO is a very
large energy and technology research center, similar in some ways to our National
Science Foundation. More details soon and note the earlier time of 4 pm in the TOYOTA
Auditorium.

OTHER APRIL EVENTS - Mark Your Calendar!

Monday, April 4, 4:00 pm. "To the Moon, Alice!" Former US Senator and Lunar Astronaut
Harrison "Jack" Schmitt returns to the Baker Center. Thanks to UT Planetary Geosciences
Institute for sponsoring his visit. You are in for a treat!

Tuesday, April 5, 5:30 pm, Global Security Lecture - Ambassador Mahamed Shaker,
Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs

Monday, April 11, 5:30 pm, Ashe Lecture - "Choosing Diplomatic Options to Engage
Enemies" by Ambassador Carey Cavanaugh. Teddy Roosevelt’s approach to foreign policy
was “speak softly, and carry a big stick,” but Washington can seem more inclined to use
the stick (military force) than speech (diplomacy) to resolve serious problems abroad.
Explore why this is so and how to better select the best foreign policy tool for the job.

Brief Bio:Ambassador (Ret.) Carey Cavanaugh is director of the Patterson School of
Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky. Earlier he was a
career Foreign Service officer, working in Washington at the Department of State,
Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, and serving overseas in Berlin, Moscow, Rome and
Switzerland. In 1992, he opened the first American Embassy to the new Republic of
Georgia. Under Presidents Clinton and Bush, he was special negotiator/peace mediator
for conflicts in Eurasia.

Wed., April 13, 5:30 pm, US Navy Being There Matters! Navy Medicine Keeping Sailors
and Marines Healthy, Ready and On the Job - Rear Admiral Terry Moulton, Nashville
native, Deputy Surgeon General and Deputy Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery for
the US Navy. Join us as we celebrate Navy Week in Knoxville!

All in the Toyota Auditorium and are free and open to the public!
