Dear undergraduate math majors, math minors, and all students with
interest in math.
I am looking for students interested in applying methods of
mathematical modeling to biological problems with the special focus on
within-host dynamics of infectious diseases and immunology. If you are
interested in applying methods of mathematics to real biological
phenomena, you may want to consider doing a research project in our
group (http://web.bio.utk.edu/Ganusov/). We use statistics, dynamical
system theory, and theory of stochastic processes to understand how
various pathogens such as HIV, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (causative
agent of Tuberculosis), and Plasmodium falciparum (causative agent of
malaria) cause diseases in their host and how replication of these
pathogens is controlled by the host immune response. Nearly all of our
projects involve actual experimental data, and in our group you will
learn not only how to apply mathematics to biological problems, but
you will also learn how primary biological data are obtained and
analyzed. There are at least two benefits for you to do a research
project in our group. First, if you are very successful, you may end
up publishing your results in a good scientific journal - a milestone
which will help you in your future careers. Second, if you do well,
you will be able to secure a strong and positive recommendation
letter, and you will need such letters as you move to your
professional careers after graduation. Several undergraduates students
who has worked in our group published papers in peer reviewed journals
and secured positions in medical and graduate schools. Please take a
look at the group webpage and if you are interested in doing a research
project, email me ([log in to unmask]) and make an appointment for a meeting.
