The Department of Psychology invites you to join Dr. Helen Neville on Monday April
20th from 1:00 – 2:30 PM at the Black Cultural Center for a presentation entitled,
“Defining and Disrupting Color-blind Racial Ideology: What We Can Do To Promote
Greater Racial Equality.” Dr. Neville is a professor of Educational Psychology and
African American Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign who has
devoted her career to research on issues of race, racism, and racial identity.
In this presentation, Dr. Neville will outline two dominant approaches to racial
color-blindness in the social science literature: color-evasion and power-evasion.
She will identify common misconceptions of the benefits of adopting a color-blind
racial ideological perspective and provide data documenting the actual harmful
influence of racial color-blindness on people of color. Empirical findings will be
discussed about ways to counter color-blind racial ideology in institutions of higher
education with the purpose of implementing policies designed to promote
increased access and equity for people of color. A moderated Q&A with Dr. Neville
will follow this presentation.
