Active Subspaces: Emerging Ideas for Dimension Reduction in Parameter
Studies, by Paul G. Constantine
x + 100 pages / Softcover / ISBN 978-1-611973-85-3 / List Price $39.00 /
SIAM Member Price $27.30 / Order Code SL02
Scientists and engineers use computer simulations to study
relationships between a model's input parameters and its
outputs. However, thorough parameter studies are challenging, if not
impossible, when the simulation is expensive and the model has several
inputs. To enable studies in these instances, the engineer may attempt
to reduce the dimension of the model's input parameter space.
Active subspaces are an emerging set of dimension reduction tools that
identify important directions in the parameter space. This book
describes techniques for discovering a model's active subspace and
proposes methods for exploiting the reduced dimension to enable
otherwise infeasible parameter studies. Readers will find new ideas
for dimension reduction, easy-to-implement algorithms, and several
examples of active subspaces in action.

Subject: New Book, Evaluating Gas Network Capacities
Evaluating Gas Network Capacities, edited by Thorsten Koch, Benjamin
Hiller, Marc E. Pfetsch, and Lars Schewe
xvi + 364 pages / Softcover / ISBN 978-1-611973-68-6 / List Price $99.00
/ SIAM Member Price $69.30 / Order Code MO21
This book addresses a seemingly simple question: Can a certain amount
of gas be transported within a pipeline network? The question is
difficult, however, when asked in relation to a meshed nationwide gas
transportation network and when taking into account technical details
and discrete decisions, as well as regulations, contracts, and varying
demands involved.
Evaluating Gas Network Capacities provides an introduction to the
field of gas transportation planning and discusses in detail the
advantages and disadvantages of several mathematical models that
address gas transport within the context of the technical and
regulatory framework. It shows how to solve the models using
sophisticated mathematical optimization algorithms and includes
examples of large-scale applications of mathematical optimization to
this real-world industrial problem.

The Department of Mathematics invites applications for two PhD
scholarships to commence in the 2015-2016 academic year. The
Department will fund 100% of UK/EU tuition fees for up to 3 years
(full time) or 6 years (part time) study at The University of
Chester. There is no stipend or contribution from the University to
students’ living costs associated with these scholarships.
The research conducted will be in an area related to the research
expertise of the Department and details of research interests are
available from departmental webpages. These interests include the
analysis and numerical analysis of functional, integral and partial
differential equations, including problems with fractional and
stochastic operators. Equations of these types arise in a variety of
applications, including Mathematical Biology and Ecology. Other
interests of the Department include Group Algebras, which has
applications in Coding Theory, for example.
Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree in
Mathematics or closely related discipline and preferably a Master’s
degree in Mathematics or closely related discipline (or be nearing the
completion of such a degree). The department is looking for
enthusiastic applicants who are keen to contribute to the ongoing
research work of the Department. Prospective applicants are
encouraged to initially contact potential supervisors at Chester with
whom they wish to work.
Candidates should apply online via the University of Chester website:
http://www.chester.ac.uk/research/degrees/application.
Their application should indicate who they wish to work with within
