Dear students and faculty,
If you are interested in outreach, invasive plants, Knoxville's Urban Wilderness,
and/or web-based mapping tools, read on...
As part of a broader Ecological Inventory of Knoxville's Urban Wilderness, the City,
UT, Legacy Parks Foundation, and Discover Life in America are partnering to
conduct invasive plant mapping events in the Urban Wilderness on March 28 and
29, and April 4 and 11. The information gained from these events will greatly help
with prioritizing management in the Urban Wilderness. As you may know, the
Urban Wilderness is an exceptional recreational asset to Knoxville, but it suffers
from extensive plant invasion. The mapping will follow the EDDmapS protocol, so
that we can link our data with a nationwide database of invasive species
distribution data.
The events are broken into 3-hr morning and afternoon shifts with complimentary
lunch provided in between shifts. Anyone can sign up for any number of shifts. No
experience with plant ID or mapping is needed, but we are in need of people with
ID skills who are willing to lead teams of 2-4 other people. We are going to be
focusing on the most common and noxious plant species (privet, honeysuckle,
etc.) not all invasive plants, and identification guides will be provided in the field.
If you'd like to participate in these events, please register using this link. And feel
free to spread the word! More details on where to meet, etc. will be provided to
registrants closer to the event dates.
