The university’s Black Cultural Programming Committee (BCPC) is a reputable
organization that fosters programs catered to the African American community at
the University of Tennessee. Our purpose is to educate and promote diversity and
cultural awareness to UT and the community. We are committed to supporting an
environment that offers an opportunity to expand awareness and knowledge as it
pertains to African Americans and other minorities. We have had a prominent
background and existence for over 30 years on campus in which our members
have served the university’s community by creating an atmosphere for the
interaction of African Americans in an academic setting.
The Black Cultural Programming Committee (BCPC) and the Office of Multicultural
Student Life will host our Annual MLK day celebration. The MLK day celebration is
set to celebrate the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. known for
being one of the most influential Civil Rights Leaders of his era, Dr. King Jr. is now
celebrated on this national holiday to commemorate the impact of his work on
today’s society. Charles Olgetree will be the key speaker. This event will be held in
the University Center Auditorium at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 15, 2015.
Charles Olgetree, the Harvard Law School Jesse Climenko Professor of Law, and
Founding and Executive Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race
and Justice, is a prominent legal theorist who has earned an international
reputation by taking a hard look at complex issues of law and by working to secure
the rights guaranteed by the Constitution for everyone equally under the law. He
has examined these issues not only in the classroom, on the internet, and in the
pages of prestigious law journals, but also in the everyday world of the public
defender in the courtroom and in the public television forums where these issues
can be dramatically revealed. He furthers dialogue by insisting that the justice
system protect rights guaranteed to those citizens by law.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information and/or questions
