Dear colleagues,
I hope this email finds you well. For those of you who I do not know my name is
Michelle Christian. I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology.
I am writing to you to request your support of a letter to Chancellor Cheek that
would request that all UT licensees sign the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and
Building Safety. Over 1100 Bangladeshi apparel workers lost their lives at Rana
Plaza in 2013. The Accord is a legally-binding contract between brands/retailers
and international unions where brands/retailers would have to financially support
building renovations, safety training, and provide stable, long-term contracts to
Bangladeshi apparel producers.
Twenty-four universities have adopted a policy that requires licensees to sign the
Accord. We hope to add UT to the list and provide a much needed regional
model for ethical collegiate apparel sourcing.
Attached is the letter. Please let me know if you would like to add your
signature. Also, please forward the letter to other faculty members who might
be interested.
We plan to deliver the letter to Chancellor Cheek this month.
Thank you,
Michelle Christian
