Hello fellow graduate students!
As I'm sure you all have heard at one point or another, there are quite a few
issues concerning the representation of women in the science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Thankfully, graduate schools like ours are
working to change that! But, for now, there is still a lot of work to be done. I've
attached an infographic that I think quickly summarizes a lot of these issues
really well.
If you're interested in learning more, want in on a chance to make an impact
here at Tennessee, or simply looking for a way to make contacts with UT
leadership and beef up that CV, the Commission For Women (CFW) has a new
opportunity for you. The CFW has just created a new committee that focuses on
issues specific to women in the nearly 50 different STEM fields here on campus,
and they're looking for graduate student members like us!
The committee's current mission is to:
• Provide a line of communication between women in STEM on campus
to the CFW and university leadership
• Raise awareness about and expand the current initiatives for
women in STEM
• Ensure that a broader definition of ‘women in STEM’ is incorporated
into the goals of UT in this area (ex: include areas of STEM that are often
underrepresented in mainstream reporting, such as geography, psychology,
kinesiology, etc.)
• Recruit more young women into STEM fields and launch initiatives to
help increase retention in STEM fields at all levels
• Reach out to male allies interested in supporting ‘women in STEM’
initiatives on campus and communicate why and how they can become more
involved
• Offer support and partnership opportunities with current, disciplinary
STEM groups on campus interested in 'women in STEM’ initiatives (ex: ACS,
SWE, Systers, WIN, etc)
If you're interested in joining either the STEM committee OR the Commission,
please feel free to email me and I can send you more information on either one
or both. The time commitment is minimal (1 or 2, one-hour meetings each
month), this call is for men and women, and the Commission has close ties with
other organizations on and off campus such as the Graduate Student Senate
(GSS) and the nationally recognized Association for Women in Science (AWIS).
Please feel free to email me with questions or comments as well.
Have a great weekend!
