To help you plan ahead, the following is a list of our Fall 2014 events in global security. 
Don't miss Dr. Charlie McMillan, Los Alamos Laboratory Director at our Oct. 1 Distinguished 
Lecture in Global Security.  

Watch our website and Facebook for updates, plus we will remind you of events as they get 
closer.  As a reminder, this week we are taking application for Baker Scholars (deadline is 
9/16/14) and the Howard Baker Policy Challenge (deadline is Friday - 9/12/14) Next week is 
Constitution Day - and numerous events that day!  Plus continuing Voter Registration Drive!  
See you next week!

Wed., Sept. 17 – Celebrate Constitution Day! Register to Vote!
•	10:30 am - Baker Café – Amendment 1 to the Tennessee Constitution – addresses 
new legislative powers regarding abortion - Dr. Mary English (Rotunda Reading Room)
•	11:30 am - 1:30 pm - Sign the Constitution! – Baker Ambassadors on the Pedestrian 
Walkway
•	2 pm  - UT College of Law Dean Doug Blaze, will moderate A Conversation with Two 
Governors – a discussion between Gov. Bill Haslam (R) and former Gov. Phil Bredesen (D) 
on TN's Amendment 2 that will appear on the November 2014 statewide ballot.  
Amendment 2 adds new checks and balance to the process of the governor appointing 
Supreme Court and appellate court judges. 

Tues., Sept. 23, 7 pm – Annual Anne Mayhew Honors Lecture:  Robert Reich, former 
Secretary of Labor, UC Berkeley professor of public policy and author.  Sponsored by the 
Chancellor’s Honors Program with support from the Baker Center and the College of 
Business Administration.  (Cox Auditorium) 

Wed., Sept. 24, 5:30 pm – Global Security Lecture – Covenant Sans Sword 
Vice Admiral Vijay Shankar (India, Ret.) of the National Institute of Advanced Studies in 
Bangalore, India, will discuss current issues in Southeast Asia.

Thursday, Sept. 25, 5:30 pm – Global Security Lecture – From ‘Participation’ to 
‘Domination’?
The Evolution of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Political Strategy. Samer Shehata, Univ. of 
Oklahoma. Sponsored by History, Baker Center, Humanities Center, Modern Foreign 
Languages and Political Science

Wed., Oct. 1, 5:30 pm – Distinguished Lecture on Global Security: The Timeline of 
Technology
Dr. Charles McMillan, Director, Los Alamos National Laboratory.  The power behind policy-
making that is informed by technology – are we ready for the future? 

Fri., Oct. 3, 10:30 am – Noon – Global Security Lecture:  Understanding the Spatial and 
Temporal Dynamics of Coup d’etats in Africa, 1960-2012  Allan Wilford, doctoral student in 
Political Science, UT – ROOM 204

Fri., Oct. 3, 11:30 am – 1 pm – Baker Center Luncheon – The Other Guy May be Right:  The 
Civility of Howard Baker 
William Haltom – book discussion and signing  - $15/person – advanced registration 
required

Wed., Oct. 22, 5:30 pm – Ashe Lecture – Ambassador Nancy Powell
Ambassador Powell (Ret.) has served as the US Ambassador to India, Nepal, Ghana, 
Pakistan, and Uganda.  Join us to learn more about her experiences and what she sees for 
the future of US international relations. 

Wed., Nov. 19, 5:30 pm – Howard Baker Public Policy Challenge Semi-Finals – Watch 
student teams compete as they present solutions to real public policy issues!


Congress to Campus Webinar – 
A bipartisan panel of up to six former members of Congress will discuss the national 
economy, global challenges and election results in these three 90-minute webinars. Times 
to be announced.
