The National Geographic Society has chosen UT to host a set of events to promote its Young Explorers Grants program on Saturday, September 20.
The National Geographic Young Explorers Grants program is for individuals 18 through 25. From monitoring threatened animals or documenting cultural change to exploring canyons—the program supports students pursuing field projects in research, exploration, and conservation. Grants also support initiatives that communicate science, exploration, and discovery to the public (e.g., journalism, film, writing).
The events include:
· A grant-writing workshop from 10:30 a.m.– 1:30 p.m. in the UC Shiloh Room. The workshop will cover fundamentals of grant writing, provide information about how to apply to the National Geographic Young Explorers Grants program, and introduce students to National Geographic explorers, conservationists, and researchers. The workshop is free and lunch is included. Online registration is advised. Students can register by visiting nationalgeographic.com/explorers/grants-programs/yeg-workshop<http://nationalgeographic.com/explorers/grants-programs/yeg-workshop><http://www.nationalgeographic.com/explorers/grants-programs/yeg-workshop>.
· An evening of field research exploration beginning at 7 p.m. in the UC Auditorium. Those attending this free, public event will hear from Kenny Broad and Mark Synnott about their exploration experiences. Broad is an ecological anthropologist and the National Geographic 2011 Explorer of the Year. He will recount his diving expedition to the Bahamas Blue Holes. Synnott is a North Face athlete and renowned climber.
An initial grant from National Geographic has helped launch the career of many of the society's—and our planet's—most renowned explorers. These grants help cover field project costs for hard-working, passionate, creative individuals with great ideas. To date, the National Geographic Society has awarded 41 grants to researchers at UT, but only one of those was a Young Explorers Grant.
