Subject: INTLAB Version 8

The new Version 8 of INTLAB, the Matlab toolbox for reliable
computing, is available. The main progress are two new toolboxes:

affari affine arithmetic toolbox
        gradients using affine quantities
        Hessians using affine quantities
        Taylor models using affine quantities
fl k-bit IEEE 754 floating-point and interval arithmetic.

All quantities are, of course, supported for scalars, vectors and
matrices. Timing of many routines improved significantly compared to
Version 7.1. Some demo files can be viewed directly under

Subject: Postdoc Position, Texas A&M

The Computer Science and Engineering Department at Texas A&M offers a
postdoctoral position for research in high-performance GPU computing,
under the direction of Tim Davis (formerly at the University of
Florida). As a newly NVIDIA designated CUDA Research Center, we are
developing new algorithms for sparse direct methods that exploit one
or more GPUs. Priority will be given to candidates who have a record
of developing robust and reliable high-performance mathematical
software. A PhD is required. The salary is competitive. The
position is for one year with possible extensions to one or two more
years.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, should be sent to

Subject: PhD/Postdoc Positions, Tensor Methods, KU Leuven

We are advertising two PhD or postdoctoral positions in the Group
Science, Engineering and Technology, Kulak, KU Leuven, Belgium and
the Stadius Center for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing and
Data Analytics, KU Leuven, Belgium (double affiliation).

Topic: Higher-order tensors or multi-way arrays are becoming
increasingly important in all branches of mathematical engineering.
A first research topic is the development of tensor-based methods
for signal processing, machine learning, system identification. A
second topic is the development of numerical linear algebra /
numerical optimization based algorithms for the computation of
tensor decompositions.

Profile: We are seeking outstanding candidates who have obtained a
master's or doctoral degree in mathematical engineering, computer
science, electrical engineering, mathematics or physics, with a
strong interest in the mathematical aspects of signal processing
and a good knowledge of linear algebra. Experience with numerical
mathematics, large-scale computation, parallel computation, data
mining and/or signal processing is a plus. Experience with tensor
techniques is not required.

The successful applicant will join a well-equipped and experienced
multidisciplinary research group. The position is initially for one
year and can be extended. The work will be supervised by Lieven De
Lathauwer

algebraic-combinatorics

At the mathematics departments of University of Bergen and NTNU
(Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim) there are
openings for PhD positions (one in each institution) within the
project "Structure Preserving Integrators, Discrete Integrable Systems
and Algebraic Combinatorics". The project, which is funded by the
Norwegian Research Council is a collaboration between NTNU, University
of Bergen, and certain universities in Spain, United Kingdom,
Australia and New Zealand. The successful candidate will be offered a
three-year position.

The research project is about fundamental properties of numerical
methods for solving differential equations and contains a variety of
tasks that can be addressed by the PhD fellow hired in this
position. It includes the study of geometric properties of numerical
methods which are tailored for certain important classes of problems,
such as Hamiltonian systems, volume preserving systems, or integrable
systems. It may involve analysis of numerical schemes, design of new
and better solution methods, and an important part of the project is
to develop symbolic and numerical software.

The applicants are required to have an MSc-degree in mathematical
sciences or physics. Candidates completing their MSc-degree in the
Spring semester 2014 are encouraged to apply.
