CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN, LIBRARIAN I - PART TIME/20 HOURS

Under the direct supervision of the Youth Services Manager, the incumbent is
responsible for assisting children and caregivers at the Children’s Information
Desk and providing general support for the Youth Services Department,
including programming, collection development and outreach.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
* Staffs the information desk to assist library patrons in-person, by phone and
email with inquiries regarding library materials and other sources of information
* Plans and conducts children’s programs including story times for babies,
toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children
* Visits schools to promote library events such as summer reading
* Stays abreast of new children’s literature in order to provide readers’
advisory services
* Compiles bibliographies on subjects of interest to children and parents
* Conducts shelf reading and weeding of collection
* Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to patrons
* Provides technology instruction to patrons and troubleshoots in the use of
internet, word processing computers, printers, copiers and e-book readers
* Designs attractive, thematic book displays
* Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public
* Other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature; ability to instruct patrons
using various technologies; ability to work in a fast paced environment under
pressure; ability to assist a diverse population of patrons in a calm and
courteous manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with other employees and library patrons; and the ability to
communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum: Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-
accredited school. Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire,
a license to practice as a registered professional librarian by the
Commonwealth of Virginia.
Salary: $26,691.48 - $36,460.61
Benefits:
Earns pro-rated annual and sick leave and is eligible for health insurance.
Schedule:
Hours are scheduled to meet the staffing needs of the library, and will include
days, evenings, two Saturdays per month, and occasional Sundays at the
Beatley Central Library.
