Subject: PENLAB: A MATLAB solver for nonlinear semidefinite optimization

We are proud to announce the release of the first version of PENLAB.

PENLAB is a free open source software package implemented in MATLAB(r)
for nonlinear optimization, linear and nonlinear semidefinite
optimization and any combination of these. The main attention was
given to clarity of the code rather than tweaks to improve its
performance. This should allow users to better understand the code and
encourage them to edit and develop the algorithm further.

PENLAB is a young brother of our code PENNON and of a new
implementation from NAG: it can solve the same classes of problems and
uses the same algorithm. Unlike PENNON, PENLAB is open source and
allows the user not only to solve problems but to modify various parts
of the algorithm. As such, PENLAB is particularly suitable for
teaching and research purposes and for testing new algorithmic ideas.

PENLAB is distributed under GNU GPL license and should be supported on
all MATLAB versions starting from R2008a.

The distribution package includes the full source code and precompiled
mex-functions, user's manual and also an internal (programmer's)
documentation. Many examples provided in the package show various ways
of calling PENLAB and handling NLP-SDP problems.

PENLAB can be downloaded from
http://web.mat.bham.ac.uk/kocvara/penlab/

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - Peter Henrici Prize 2015

The Peter Henrici Prize is awarded every four years jointly by ETH
Zurich and SIAM for original contributions to applied analysis and
numerical analysis and/or for exposition appropriate for applied
mathematics and scientific computing. The award is intended to
recognize broad and extended contributions to these subjects, more
than a single outstanding work.

The Henrici Prize will be awarded at ICIAM 2015 to be held August
10-14, 2015, in Beijing, P. R. China. The award will include a
certificate containing the citation, a cash award of US$5000, and an
invitation to present a lecture at the congress. Reasonable travel
expenses for attendance at the congress will also be reimbursed.

A nomination should include a letter of nomination, including a
description of the contributions, a CV of the candidate, and up to
(but no more than) six (6) letters of support. Nominations should be
addressed to Professor Qiang Du, Chair, Peter Henrici Prize Selection
Committee, and sent by MAY 1, 2014, to the e-mail address given in the
call for nominations at
http://www.siam.org/prizes/nominations/nom_henrici.php. Inquiries
should be addressed to J. M. Littleton at [log in to unmask]

Subject: New Book, Integral Equation Methods in Scattering Theory

Announcing the November 15, 2013, publication by SIAM of:

Integral Equation Methods in Scattering Theory, by David Colton and
Rainer Kress

2013 / xvi + 271 pages / Softcover / 978-1-611973-15-0 / List Price
$92.00 / SIAM Member Price $64.40 / Order Code CL72

This classic book provides a rigorous treatment of the Riesz–Fredholm
theory of compact operators in dual systems, followed by a derivation
of the jump relations and mapping properties of scalar and vector
potentials in spaces of continuous and Hölder continuous functions.
These results are then used to study scattering problems for the
Helmholtz and Maxwell equations.

Readers will benefit from a full discussion of the mapping properties
of scalar and vector potentials in spaces of continuous and Hölder
continuous functions, an in-depth treatment of the use of boundary
integral equations to solve scattering problems for acoustic and
electromagnetic waves, and an introduction to inverse scattering
theory with an emphasis on the ill-posedness and nonlinearity of the
inverse scattering problem.

The Fortran language standard has undergone significant upgrades in
recent years (1990, 1995, 2003, and 2008). Numerical Computing with
Modern Fortran illustrates many of these improvements through
practical solutions to a number of scientific and engineering
problems.

Readers will discover techniques for modernizing algorithms written
in Fortran; examples of Fortran interoperating with C or C++
programs, plus using the IEEE floating-point standard for efficiency;
illustrations of parallel Fortran programming using coarrays, MPI,
and OpenMP; and a supplementary website with downloadable source
codes discussed in the book.

contents, preface, and index, please visit http://www.ec-
