On behalf of the Sociology Graduate Student Association, I invite you to
attend the annual SGSA Event Series from 6:00-7:30pm on Wednesday, April 10
in the International House Great Room. This year’s discussion, Green Is The
New Red: An International Account of Social Movements Under Siege, will
feature a lecture by award winning journalist and social justice advocate
Will Potter. Mr. Potter has lectured at more than 100 universities and
public forums internationally including Georgetown University, The New York
City Bar Association, and the House of Democracy and Human Rights in Berlin.
Will is also an advisory board member of the Rosenberg Fund for Children,
and he teaches investigative journalism at the University of Southern Maine.
In 2006, Will spoke to Congress about his reporting on issues dealing with
social movements, terrorism, civil liberties and the Animal Enterprise
Terrorism Act.
The discussion with Will Potter will promote a greater understanding of the
animal rights and environmental movements within the context of a post-9/11
atmosphere in which activists are increasingly being labeled and prosecuted
as terrorists. The discussion will focus on the work that Mr. Potter has
conducted in the United States, Austria, Finland and Spain. His discussion
will provide space for exploring a bevy of topics including, but not limited
to, the role of journalism within the academy, current trends towards the
criminalization of investigative reporting, unsustainable global practices
in factory farming, animal experimentation and contemporary environmental
issues.
