Hello UT CEHHS Graduate Students,
The UT Center for Sport, Peace, and Society invites you to the Women's
Empowerment & Sports Diplomacy Panel on April 2, 2013 from 11am - 1pm at
the Baker Center Toyota Auditorium.
From April 1-10, the UT Center for Sport, Peace, and Society will be
hosting 24 female basketball players and coaches from Liberia, Lithuania,
Pakistan, the Philippines, the Gulf, and Venezuela. These women are
participating in the U.S. Department of State Empowering Women and Girls
through Sports Initiative, which is facilitated in cooperation with UT's
Center for Sport, Peace, and Society. The specific program for April is a
"Multi-Country Basketball Exchange." These athletes and their coaches will
visit Knoxville for one week to experience U.S. college athletics and
academics. Then, the group will proceed to New Orleans to experience the
NCAA Division 1 Women's Basketball Final Four.
The panel will include coaches from each of the previously listed
countries. They will shed light on cultural issues within their
communities and the obstacles that women face in order to pursue sport and
education. They will also share the ways they as women are slowly
transforming their communities to create a positive, more peaceful world.
The panel will be facilitated by Drs. Sarah Hillyer and Ashleigh Huffman,
who are the directors of the Center for Sport, Peace, and Society and were
the 2013 CEHHS Graduate Student Colloquium Keynote Speakers.
