Interested in Math 534 Summer 2013 First Session ?
---------------------------------------------------
While at this moment there is no predicting about actual
course availability in summer, I'd like to poll students
about their interest for one specific course:
*If* Math 534 were offered this summer 1st session, morning slot,
would you likely take it? Please respond asap
to [log in to unmask] if interested.
534 is `Calculus of Variations'.
This is about classical minimax problems in which the
unknown is a function (eg describing a geometric curve).
The `derivative=0' condition leads to a differential equation.
The course blends therefore well with either
ODEs or PDEs, but has neither as a prerequisite.
It is feasible for mathematically strong senior undergraduates
(whose major might also be physics, in view of the fact that
key equations of physics can be phrased in terms of minimax problems.)
If the course becomes available, and if I were to teach it, it would be
taught without expenses for textbook, as I have my own course notes.
Typically we have been offering the course every 3-4 years, so
most students have only one opportunity to take the course.
Thanks a lot for your feedback
