--- "Taps," the somber bugle call associated with military service, will be heard ringing across UT on the chimes of Ayres Hall today in celebration of Veterans Day. This year marks the 150th anniversary of "Taps," and with it a new tradition will be born. UT's Task Force in Support of Student Veterans asked campus administration to allow Ayres Hall's chimes to play "Taps" while a moment of silence is observed at noon on Veterans Day.

Good News

--- For the first time, Facebook users will select the winner of UT's Vol Court, a contest between aspiring entrepreneurs for cash prizes to launch their business. Voting is now under way and closes at 11:00 p.m. tomorrow. The two final businesses in the competition are Credit Virgin, an online platform that helps students build good credit scores, and Find Food, a mobile application to help shoppers locate food items in a grocery store.

--- David Madden will read at Writers in the Library, 7 p.m. tonight in the Hodges Library auditorium. A novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, and critic, Madden is a UT grad. His latest novel is "London Bridge in Plague and Fire." He will hold a Q&A session for all interested students from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. today in 115 HSS Bldg. More at library.utk.edu/writers.

--- "King of Devil's Island" is the true story of an uprising by the young inmates of a Norwegian prison colony for boys. --- Sen. George Mitchell, a longtime statesman and attorney, will be on campus tomorrow to deliver the inaugural Baker Distinguished Lecture. Free and open to the public, the lecture—sponsored by the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, SunTrust Bank, Knoxville News Sentinel, and WUOT—will begin at 2 p.m. in the Cox Auditorium of Alumni Memorial Building.

--- Eugenie Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education, will be giving lectures on Nov. 13 and 14 as part of the Department of Anthropology's annual capstone courses. --- The WannaBeatles will bring back the craze of the British Invasion by paying tribute to The Beatles at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Bijou Theatre. --- McClung Speech Contest, 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 in Cox Auditorium of AMB. This is the largest public speaking competition in the Southeast and all students are welcome. --- Over 1 billion people on the planet lack access to clean water, and, as a result, every year over 3 million people die from drinking contaminated water. On Nov. 16 the UT chapter of the charity Wine to Water is hosting an awareness campaign for this cause. They ask that all students come to campus that day wearing blue (other than blue jeans) with a piece of paper pinned to it reading "Why Blue". --- A Chancellor's Honors thesis play will be performed this week in the Clarence Brown Lab Theatre. "10,000 Words", an original play written and directed by senior Dimi Venkov, explores the process of creating theatre through a series of humorous vignettes. --- It's time for UT to "bleed orange" for MEDIC Regional Blood Center's 25th annual Battle of the Orange and Blue. The blood drive competition, which pits UT against the University of Kentucky, begins today and ends Nov. 16.

--- This Fall WE KAN (Women Empowerment Knowledge and Nurture) is raising money to serve the homeless in collaboration with Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries. --- The first All Sing event at UT was held in 1932. Since then, All Sing has become an annual campus-wide tradition and is one of the four major competitions that lead up to the presentation of the ACE Cup.
