--- It won't be long before UT students are enjoying the new and long-awaited RecSports fields on Sutherland Avenue. The 40-acre complex will open early in the spring semester.

--- More work is commencing for the new Student Union. Today, construction fencing will go up around Temple Court, Aconda Court and the building at 812 Volunteer Boulevard. The area known as "the pit," including the Smokey's entrance, also will be inaccessible. Demolition of the three buildings will begin in mid-December.

--- Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6. Are you registered to vote in Knox County? If so, you can vote early on campus starting today and continuing until Nov. 1. The campus early voting location is in Room 227 of the University Center, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. A photo identification card issued by a state or federal government is required. Your UT student ID does not meet this requirement. For more info visit the Knox County Election Commission website at http://www.knoxcounty.org/election/.

--- Homecoming 2012 --- A veterans reunion, the annual campus parade, and a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act are among the events highlighting this year's Homecoming celebrations. Homecoming events are underway and will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 3, when the football Vols take on Troy in Neyland Stadium. Kickoff is at noon.

--- Cancellation: Hurricane Sandy has pre-empted the appearance of David Prouty, the chief labor counsel for the Major League Baseball Players Association, who was scheduled to speak at the College of Law today. Prouty lives in New York, and weather is preventing his travel to Tennessee. His presentation will be rescheduled at a later date.

--- Students, faculty and staff who are also military veterans are invited to sign a board commemorating Veterans Day. The board will be displayed on campus during the National Day of Remembrance on Nov. 12 and other times throughout the year. To sign the board, visit 209 Student Services Building from Tuesday, Oct. 30, through Friday, Nov. 9 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

--- The American Boychoir, the nation's premier concert boys choir, will present several workshops and a concert tomorrow in the Cox Auditorium of the Alumni Memorial Building. --- Want to bring your children to Trick-or-Treat in a safe environment on campus? Several events are taking place on campus this week:

- United Residence Halls Council Trunk or Treat, 6:00-8:00 p.m. tonight in Circle Park on Volunteer Boulevard. This safe and fun trick-or-treating alternative is free and open to everyone. The event features food, crafts, and games.

- Reese Hall Haunted House, 7:00 p.m. tonight until 1:00 a.m. Tuesday at Reese Hall, 1910 Caledonia Avenue. The haunted house will be open Monday and Tuesday, October 29 and 30. The cost is $3 and all proceeds benefit Knoxville Habitat for Humanity.

- Collegiate 4-H trick-or-treating for all UT Knoxville and UT Institute of Agriculture students, faculty, and staff with children, 6:00 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in Morgan Hall on the Ag Campus. 

--- PRSSA, UT's pre-professional organization for public relations students, will host a resume critique at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Scripps Convergence Lab in the communications building. Eleven PR professionals will be there to look over resumes and give tips for improvement. Free pizza will be served, and all majors are welcome. Questions? e-mail [log in to unmask]

--- Internationally acclaimed poet Adam Zagajewski -- widely known for his poem "Try to Praise the Mutilated World" published in The New Yorker in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks -- will be on campus on Wednesday, Oct. 31, to read from his works. He will participate in an informal chat at 2:00 p.m. in McClung Tower. His reading begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Hodges Library auditorium. Both events are free and open to the public.

--- Do you want to teach freshmen what it means to be a leader and a true Volunteer? Apply to be an Ignite Team Leader online now at leadershipandservice.utk.edu and be a part of next summer’s leadership, service, and adventure. Complete your application by Nov. 1 and come to the Center for Leadership and Service (UC room 305) by Nov. 2 to sign up for an interview. An interest session will be held at 5 p.m. tomorrow in UC room 223.

--- The English Language Institute needs male volunteers for its Conversation Partners Program. Conversation Partners meet on a weekly basis with ELI international students (mostly Arabic and Korean speakers) to help them practice English conversation. Questions? e-mail [log in to unmask]

--- Do you identify as disabled? Come have your picture taken as part of Campus Disability Advocate's campaign to increase awareness about disability and diversity. Ready for the World Events

--- Culinary adventurers will take a trip to the Far East on Thursday, Nov. 1, when they feast on sushi and other Japanese fare at UT's Ready for the World Café at the UT Visitors Center.

On the menu:

Tempura prawns and vegetables with sweet soy sauce, caterpillar roll (rice with barbecued eel, crab meat, cucumber and avocados), tuna nigiri (tuna and rice) and a sea urchin shooter (sea urchin in a glass filled with other ingredients), served with pickled ginger, wasabi and daikon radish accompaniments, and kiwi jelly for dessert.
