PUTNAM COMPETITION:
Undergraduate students with excellent Math skills (regardless of major)
are invited to consider participating in the William Lowell Putnam Math
competition. This competition takes place every year the first Saturday
in December. Students from colleges all over the US and Canada participate
at the same time (adjusted for time zones) in this competition, locally
proctored. You may participate maximum 4 times, while an undergraduate
student. Even if you solve only one of the 2x6 problems, this will be a strong
recommendation for graduate applications, or otherwise look great on your CV.
We MUST register participants beforehand, since the organizers send
the appropriate number of exam stationary to us. We should not grossly
over-register, but if you are considering participation, but are not sure,
we'd like to register you just in case, and a withdrawal could be done
without adverse consequences (and offer the option of another participant
using the slot).
Participants of last year's competition (if still eligible) and of Math 309
will be registered automatically; all others need to request registration.
If you are interested to participate or have further questions,
please contact Jochen Denzler ([log in to unmask])
MATH 309:
If you are interested, now or in the future, to participate in Putnam,
consider signing up for Math 309 (1 credit hour S/NC grading).
Or request to be signed up, through either Tina Murr ([log in to unmask])
or me ([log in to unmask]).
Note that we start NOT tomorrow, but NEXT week!
This gives us the chance to adjust the course to individual sign-ups.
Likewise, the trick of signing up through the department rather than directly
is meant to help our planning, not as a hurdle against interested parties.
You may take Math 309 without participating in the Putnam and vice versa.
Math 309 serves as an individualized training of problem solving skills.
VTRMC:
The Virginia Tech Regional Mathematical Competition is intended as
a warm-up for Putnam, but can be partaken of independently. We are
registered as an institution already, and any interested participant
will be registered on exam day simply by showing up. The time is
Satuday Ocyt 27, 9-11:30am.
We still need you to express your interest beforehand, so that we
can plan for room size, and email you individually with room information
and reminder notices. Please contact [log in to unmask]
Go Putnam-Vols!
