The UWG Special Collections is composed of 6,000 linear feet of material in the broad categories of political history, psychology, local history, and oral history. The collections include a rare book library of about 3,000 volumes. Primary among the collections is Georgia's Political Heritage Program, an oral history project begun in 1984 documenting nearly 100 Georgia politicians since World War II, including governors and Congressmen as well as state legislators. The political collections also include the papers of former GOP Congressman and now Libertarian commentator Bob Barr, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's Congressional papers. A corollary to the political collections is the recently dedicated library exhibit and office replication honoring the late Georgia Speaker of the House Thomas B. Murphy whose tenure of twenty-eight years set a national record. For more information about UWG Special Collections, see www.westga.edu/special/index.php.
