Good News

--- A group of twenty social work students attended United Nations conferences in late March to develop skills and gain knowledge about best practices to address important global issues. The students participated in the Global Social Work Student Conference and the 29th Annual Social Work Day at the United Nations in New York City. The trip was organized by Steven Stothard, a graduating master's of social work student, and Laurel Laiewski, a doctoral student. The conferences highlighted international social work, intercultural and multicultural issues and globally trending problems. The trip was paid for in part through student fundraisers, the College of Social Work, UT's Ready for the World initiative, the Office of Equity and Diversity and the local chapter of the National Alliance of Mental Illness.

--- UT cello student Jeremiah Welch will perform in a tribute to heroes May 9 as part of National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day. He will join other youth from around the country at the celebration, which will take place at the Lisner Auditorium on the campus of George Washington University in Washington DC. The event is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Along with travel support, Welch, a sophomore cello performance major, will receive a $500 honorarium. The May 9 event will begin with an art exhibit featuring contributions from youth, which will be sponsored by the American Art Therapy Association. Following the exhibit will be a tribute to the heroes of hope – family, friends and providers – who have helped young people who have experienced trauma.

--- UT student Elizabeth "Beth" Scripa of Kingsport is the recipient of the 2012 Claxton Medallion. The $5,000 award is given to a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences who will be entering a fifth-year internship in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences to become a teacher. Scripa will graduate this week with a bachelor of arts in Spanish. She plans to complete her graduate studies during her internship year. Her immediate professional goal is to be an elementary school teacher but she hopes to eventually obtain a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade reading specialist license. The Claxton Medallion was established in 1995 by former College of Arts and Sciences board member Philander P. Claxton Jr. in memory of his father, Philander P. Claxton.
