--- Do you have a learning disability, ADHD, dyslexia, or problems with reading, math, written expression, etc.? Are you looking for a safe place to connect with others like you, receive support, and talk about your concerns? Join the student support group that mixes discussion with information on disabilities such as: advocacy, your rights, professional and personal development. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome. The group meets every Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Student Health Center, 1800 Volunteer Blvd., 2nd Floor in the Counseling Center, room 287. Questions? --- The Commons in Hodges Library will soon undergo a major renovation. This construction project on the busiest floor of the campus's main library will begin immediately following Spring Semester final exams. The pay-off for some temporary inconvenience will be an updated facility that integrates the Studio and provides more group study spaces, more natural light, and better organized services. Watch for updates on the Commons construction project at conezone.utk.edu.

Good News

--- The UT Police Department has received two grants from the Governor's Highway Safety Office to support its "Safe–T Begins with Me" campaign, which includes programs aimed at reducing alcohol-related driving incidents and speeding on campus. The Alcohol Countermeasures grant focuses on educating the campus community on the dangers associated with drinking and how it can impact highway safety.

--- Noted foreign policy expert Walter Russell Mead will visit the campus on April 2 and 3. Mead will present a lecture titled "American Strategy in the Atomic Age" at 5:00 p.m. on April 2. At noon on April 3 there will be a panel discussion on "Public Intellectuals and Blogging" featuring Mead and Glenn Reynolds, professor in the UT College of Law and author of the blog "Instapundit."

--- A screening of "Food Inc.," a 94 minute documentary that explores the current methods of raw food production, will take place on Monday, April 2 at 6:00 p.m. in room 236 in the South Commons of Hodges Library. There will be a short discussion after the screening. Learn how the current method of raw food production came to be, what it means for our future, and ways to become part of the change. Questions? --- The Secular Student Alliance at UTK is hosting a panel on the recent anti-evolution legislature on Monday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. in UC room 235. Andrew Kramer of Anthropology, Judy Cornett of the College of Law, Stanley Guffey of Biology, and local attorney Margaret Held will discuss recent legislation passed by the Tennessee General Assembly that may threaten the teaching of evolution and other important scientific issues in Tennessee schools. --- Writers in the Library will feature readings by poets Jesse Graves and Don Johnson on Monday, April 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hodges Library auditorium. Graves' new collection, "Tennessee Landscape with Blighted Pine," won the 2012 Weatherford Award for Poetry. Don Johnson, in addition to writing poetry, writes about sports. --- Amnesty International at UTK hosts its 2nd annual Human Rights Week.  On Monday, April 2, a panel will discuss "Immigrant and Undocumented Peoples' Rights" at 7:00 p.m. in the UC Hermitage Room. A reception with refreshments will follow. On Tuesday, April 3, a special screening of "Education Under Fire," a film that addresses the persecution of Iran's Baha'i community and their systematic exclusion from higher education, will be held in the UC Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. A panel discussion featuring filmmaker Jeff Kauffman will follow. A panel on LGBTQ Rights will take place on Wednesday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m. in the International House Great Room, followed by light refreshments. Scott Langley's "Death Penalty" exhibit including photos from the Troy Davis case will be displayed all week in the Black Cultural Center Gallery/Lobby and the 2nd floor of Hodges Library. --- Career Services presents a Sustainability Careers Panel discussion, Tuesday, April 3, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Career Services. As part of Earth Month celebrations, explore opportunities to Keep Our World Green through environmentally impactful careers. Join Career Services to hear from representatives working in environmentally-sustainable careers and organizations. Discussions will cover their own personal career paths and advice for your own career development and job seeking. --- A screening of "Austin Unbound," the first documentary about a man who is deaf and transsexual, will take place on Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Nursing Building room 105. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Austin and producer Eliza Greenwood. The screening is sponsored by the Ready for the World Initiative, the Issues Committee, the Counseling Psychology Department, the Chancellor's LGBT Commission, and the Teaching Practice and Theories in Education Department.

--- Are you interested in a degree in public health? The UT Masters of Public Health (MPH) program will be hosting an information session for prospective MPH students on Tuesday, April 3 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Great Room of the International House. The session will consist of an overview of the program, the application/admissions process, and information about career opportunities. A panel with current students and a question and answer period will follow. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Parking is available in the lot S12. --- Make plans to attend the UT Police Department's public forum for reaccreditation beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4 in the Shiloh Room of the University Center. Representatives from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will be on campus for the department's first review since being accredited in 2009. All UT students, faculty, staff and Knoxville community members are invited to attend and offer comments. The CALEA team will look at UTPD's policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services. UTPD is one of only two CALEA-accredited university departments in Tennessee and one of only fifty-three CALEA-accredited university departments in the country. You can also provide feedback via telephone by calling 865-974-0136 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on April 3. The CALEA team will take comments on a non-recorded line.

--- Career Services presents "Passport to International Careers," on Wednesday, April 4 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Career Services. Attend this event to gain an overview of career fields and opportunities for short or long term work abroad. This workshop will include a panel of professionals who represent work experience abroad in teaching, hospitality and tourism, international business, government, research, and more. Panelists will describe their experiences and be available to answer questions. Topics covered include: how to prepare for international work, how to conduct an international job search, and other important details to consider.

--- Pre-law meeting and law school representatives panel, Wednesday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m. in UC 223-224. Learn about Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law and hear from a panel of law school representatives, including the University of Tennessee College of Law, LMU-Duncan School of Law, and Atlanta's John Marshall Law School. The representatives will talk about what their schools have to offer and will answer questions from those in attendance.

--- Support Habitat for Humanity and get downright muddy doing it! What more could you ask for in a cause? The Habitat for Humanity Chapter at UTK will host a Mud Run on Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. This run is a gnarly 5k race through filthy mud pits and other fun obstacles with a team of five of your comrades! A few of the obstacles you will encounter on your voyage are: Slip N Down Muddy Hill, Bottoms Down Belly Crawl, Mud Tower, Muddy Fields Forever, Criss-Cross-Mud-Sauce, The Great Tire Mire, and others! The kind people at Deep Well Farm will be hosting the event at their lovely farm normally used for their Corn Maze, Pumpkin Patch, and Dead Man's Farm. Go to www.deepwellfarm.com to register.

--- Want to help your fellow students be more academically successful? The Student Success Center is now taking applications for Supplemental Instruction Leaders for the Fall 2012 semester. SI Leaders hold group study sessions several times a week for selected courses where the SI Leader helps students review and understand course content. Positions are available for the following courses: Math 115, 119, and 130, Chemistry 120, 130 and 350, Engineering Fundamentals 151 and 152, Astronomy 151, and History 261. --- Interested in Arabic language or culture? The English Language Institute is looking for volunteers for its Conversation Partners Program. Conversation Partners meet on a weekly basis with ELI international students for the purpose of practicing English conversation. We specifically need male volunteers to meet with Arabic speakers.

--- The Knoxville Area Urban League promotes diversity, economic, and social equity for all citizens. They also have great leadership and life-skill opportunities for students, including "Project Ready," an innovative and unique college access program for Knoxville's youth. They are currently seeking graduate students and fourth-year undergraduate students in the following areas: mathematics, critical thinking, literacy, nutrition & fitness, science & technology, and literacy to volunteer for their four week summer program. Be a leader in your community for a very small commitment of your time. --- Sign up for "Canstructarama," the Rotaract Club's canned food drive to benefit the Love Kitchen in Knoxville. On Saturday, April 14 at 12:30 p.m., all participating organizations are invited to bring their cans to the Humanities amphitheater and use them to create an object, word, place, or idea that best defines their group/organization using only their cans. The creations will be judged based on originality, technical skill, and the amount of cans used. Winning groups will receive recognition and a prize package sponsored by Brixx Pizza, Chandler's, Rita's, and more.
